Mindere resultaten koude douche voor Vettel: "Veranderde regels raakten ons hard"

Viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel maakte voor vorig seizoen de overstap naar het team van Aston Martin. De ervaren Duitser hoopte zijn carrière nieuw leven in te blazen na een jammerlijk laatste Ferrari-jaar. Het lukte maar met mondjesmaat, Vettel pakte één podium en eindigde als elfde in het kampioenschap.

De overstap van Vettel leek een gouden greep in wording. Aston Martin barstte namelijk van de ambitie en was in 2020 ,toen nog als Racing Point, zeer succesvol. Maar afgelopen jaar was het succes verdampt en was Vettel veroordeeld tot het middenveld gevecht. Hij genoot van zijn werkzaamheden bij het team maar de prestaties vielen niet in de smaak bij de goedlachse Duitser.

Minder blij

Tegenover de officiële site van de Formule 1 is Vettel open en eerlijk. Hij was blij met zijn team maar minder blij met zijn resultaten: "Het hele team en ik hoopte vanzelfsprekend op meer. Ik denk dat de veranderingen van de regels ons hard raakten. Het team had een fantastische auto in 2020 maar in 2021 was dat niet het geval. We deden wat we konden."

Sterker

Aankomend seizoen gaan er nieuwe regels gelden en Vettel heeft goede hoop. De nieuwe regelementen kunnen immers alles overhoop gooien: "Er waren hoogtepunten maar ook zeker dieptepunten. We hebben natuurlijk hoge verwachtingen voor 2022 met de nieuwe auto en de nieuwe regels. Het team groeit en hopelijk worden ze ook sterker."

Dat krijg je als je in 2020 een 2019 wagen van een concurrent gekopieerd hebt, zonder daar de filosofie achter te snappen, waardoor veranderingen in de reglementen moeilijker opgevangen kunnen worden.

Sebastiaan is het type coureur waarbij echt alles tot in de puntjes moet kloppen wil hij de broodnodige twee eenheid met zijn materiaal kunnen vormen zoals hij dat bij Red Bull kon. Zowel de Ferrari als Aston Martin hebben hem dat gevoel (nog) niet kunnen geven.

  Bij Ferrari waren ze op goede weg. Maar helaas liep het telkens na de zomer mis.
  
  Ik vrees dat we Seb, waar ik best veel sympathie voor heb, niet meer al te vaak gaan zien juichen. Of vrij vertaald: his ship has sailed.
  
  Gaat het in 2022 niet beter voor AM zie ik hem eind jaar de helm aan de wilgen hangen.

  Het breekpunt was het moment dat hij op natte baan achter SC (daar istie weer!) de vangrail in reed in Duitsland. Vanaf dat moment had Lewis de overhand en.pakte zijn vijfde titel.

  Dat was ook meteen het moment dat Vettel niet meer was zoals we hem daarvoor kende. Knullige fouten ging maken etc. Hoop echt op een wederopstanding ipv een nachtkaars verhaal. Goede coureur, leuke kerel.
