Latifi wil leiderschap tonen: "Ik moet zeker zijn van mijn beslissingen"

Het aankomende seizoen zal er veel veranderen in de Formule 1. De nieuwe regelementen kunnen zomaar voor een ware aardverschuiving zorgen en daarnaast zijn veel coureurs van team gewisseld. Bij het team van Williams zullen de veranderingen waarschijnlijk zeer voelbaar zijn. Ze hebben immers afscheid genomen van hun kopman George Russell.

Russell heeft promotie gekregen en is aankomend seizoen Mercedes-coureur. Zijn plekje bij Williams wordt opgevuld door voormalig Red Bull-coureur Alexander Albon. De Britse Thai heeft in 2021 niet in de Formule 1 gereden en zal dus zijn draai moeten zoeken bij de Britse ploeg. Dit zorgt ervoor dat Nicholas Latifi de meest ervaren man is bij Williams.

Leider

De Canadees is zich bewust van zijn rol en wil dan ook graag de kar gaan trekken. Latifi weet wat de bijkomende verwachtingen zijn van zijn nieuwe rol. Tegenover The Race deelt hij zijn visie: "Het is een nieuwe auto, een nieuwe start. De feedback zal cruciaal zijn en dat is iets nieuws voor mij. Ik moet de rol van leider op mij nemen en zeker zijn van mijn beslissingen."

Net zo snel

De nieuwe regels zorgen ervoor dat iedereen in theorie op nul gaat beginnen. Latifi tast nog volledig in het duister maar weet wat hem te doen staat. De Canadees krijgt meer vertrouwen: "Als ik het gevoel heb dat ik het meeste uit de auto en uit het pakket haal, dan kan ik net zo snel zijn als de rest."

Ik denk dat Albon meer ervaring heeft in het testen van diverse afstellingen, zijn tijd bij SAT en Red Bull met zijn werk afgelopen jaar in de simulator om per race settings te testen, is erg waardevol. Ik ken Latifi's kwaliteiten niet, maar Albon heeft op mij een goede indruk achter gelaten.

Geen idee waar Latifi het idee vandaag haalt dat hij de leider moet zijn. Omdat hij een flink deel van de rekeningen betaalt? Dit was vorig seizoen ook zo. Het zou mij erg verbazen als hij ook maar competitief is vs. Albon.

Maar goed, het zou wel leuk zijn als Latifi het beter zou doen. Hij werd wel steeds sneller. Echter is dat niet onlogisch als je een tijdje in de auto rijdt. Het probleem is dat deze verbetering niet bepaald snel lijkt te komen voor een coureur die toch redelijk ervaren is inmiddels.
