Vasseur verklaart uitblijven debuut Pourchaire: "Onze auto is zó complex"

Alfa Romeo moest halverwege het vorige seizoen op zoek naar een opvolger voor Kimi Räikkönen. De Fin kondigde zijn pensioen aan en de Zwitserse ploeg kon aan de slag. Meerdere namen passeerde de revue maar uiteindelijk werd vertrekkend Mercedes-coureur Valtteri Bottas aangetrokken. De Fin gaat een duo vormen met nieuweling Guanyu Zhou.

Maar in plaats van Bottas had Alfa Romeo uit meerdere andere smaakjes kunnen kiezen. Ze hadden namelijk ook een risico kunnen nemen door voor de jeugd te kiezen. Sauber-jongeling Théo Pourchaire was namelijk ook in beeld voor het vrijgekomen stoeltje. De jonge Fransman maakte indruk in de Formule 2 en lijkt een grote belofte voor de toekomst.

Monaco

Teambaas Frédéric Vasseur geeft eerlijk toe dat Pourchaire kortstondig door zijn hoofd is geschoten als mogelijke Räikkönen-opvolger. Tegenover de officiële site van de Formule 1 geeft hij dat eerlijk toe: "Hij won in Monaco maar onze auto is zó complex en we hebben maar zes testdagen voor het seizoen begint. Volgens mij betekent dat, dat de stap te risicovol en te uitdagend zou zijn. Het is veel beter voor hem als hij zich in 2022 kan focussen op het kampioenschap in de Formule 2 en dan zien we in de toekomst wel."

Vette vis

Het betekent overigens niet dat Pourchaire in 2022 helemaal niet in actie zal komen in een Formule 1-bolide. Vasseur houdt zijn toptalent een vette vis voor: "Théo zal zeker in actie komen in enkele eerste vrije trainingen. We zullen een paar testdagen inplannen zodat we hem kunnen voorbereiden voor de toekomst. Maar wanneer je meet doet voor het kampioenschap in de Formule 2, dan is dat het meest belangrijke en niet iets zoals dit. Ik zal van hem vragen of hij de Formule 2 wil gaan pakken."

En wat is het verschil met Zhou dan? Ja die heeft een paar tests gedaan, maar verder zie ik geen verschil? Ja oké, een dikke bak met geld is wel het verschil, maar vind het een beetje vaag.

  2 rookies is niet bepaald de beste keuze. Met Bottas halen ze pakken ervaring mee in huis wat over het hele raceteam zal renderen. Zhou brengt China op de grid - Vasseur weet wat hij doet.
