Colton Herta openhartig over F1-ambitie: "Zou ik zeker voor gaan"

IndyCar-coureur Colton Herta heeft tijdens een mediasessie zijn verlangen om ooit in de Formule 1 te racen niet onder stoelen of banken geschoven. Vorig jaar was er al kortstondig een lobby gaande om de 21-jarige Amerikaan naar de koningsklasse van de autosport te helpen, maar dat wierp geen vruchten af. Nu laat hij zelf doorschemeren een toekomst in de Formule 1 te ambiëren.

Op vragen van MotorsportWeek.com antwoordde Herta: "Ik zou liegen als ik zou zeggen dat de Formule 1 niet op mijn wensenlijstje staat. Ik wil veel meer doen in mijn carrière, maar je bent voor een groot deel ook afhankelijk van de juiste timing. De Formule 1 is een van die dingen. Als je 28 bent, dan ga je die overstap niet meer maken. Zo werkt het gewoon. Maar ik heb nog de tijd, mocht de juiste mogelijkheid zich aandienen."

De Andretti-coureur is de jongste IndyCar-winnaar ooit - hij was achttien jaar en elf maanden toen hij zijn eerste zege behaalde. Een eerste titel laat nog op zich wachten. Herta vervolgt: "Ik zou er goed over na moeten denken, maar waarschijnlijk zou ik het wel doen, want ik wil zeker op een gegeven moment in de Formule 1 racen. Men vergeet dat ik nog maar 21 jaar ben en denken dat ik niet na vijf jaar terug zou kunnen keren om nog vijftien jaar in IndyCar te racen, tot mijn 40ste."

Hij staat dus absoluut open voor een Formule 1-avontuur, maar ook in de IndyCar Series verveelt hij zich niet. "Ja, ik wil zeker een poging in de Formule 1 wagen, mocht ik de kans krijgen. Maar ik ben niet teleurgesteld in de IndyCar. Deze serie ligt me na aan het hart en ik geniet van het racen en de competitie in deze klasse. Ik wil gewoon ook andere dingen dan IndyCar doen in mijn loopbaan", aldus Herta.

Toch steeds meer aanwijzingen dat de F1 wel degelijk meer en meer gaat leven daar.

Vraag me af wanneer we de laatste echt goede Amerikaan hebben gehad in F1. Ben dat echt even kwijt.

  laatste was Rossi btw, helaas reed hij voor Virgin team waardoor hij weinig kon laten zien, die had best potentie, maar helaas liepen Amerikaanse sponsors nog niet warm voor F1

  O ja. Cheever. Dat was een talent. En van hem kan ik me nog sterke races herinneren in mindere auto's. Tot hij wel bij een top team kwam er behoorlijk te kort leek te komen tov zijn teamgenoot. Was dat niet in de Renault naast Arnoux? Staat me ook bij dat hij in de Beneton reed.
  Ik kan me vooral een erg sterke race in de VS herinneren van hem.

“Ik wil gewoon ook andere dingen dan IndyCar doen in mijn loopbaan”, aldus Herta.

Als je ook andere dingen wilt doen ga dan eerst maar eens naar een fatsoenlijke kapper Colton, want we zitten niet te wachten op een nozem in de F1.

  Dat verklaart ook waarom coureurs uit de IndyCar onevenredig veel licentiepunten moeten verzamelen van de FIA om tot de F1 te worden toegelaten...
