Traditionele F1-circuits in verval gewaarschuwd: "Ogen armetierig"

De verspreide foto's van de verbouwing die gaande is bij het circuit van Spa-Francorchamps zullen sommige fans een doorn in het oog zijn, maar de renovatie is noodzakelijk om te blijven voldoen aan de standaards en eisen die de Formule 1 stelt. Dat blijkt wel uit de woorden van Alpine-directeur Laurent Rossi, die een waarschuwingsschot in de richting van de traditionele circuits loste.

Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone en Monza hebben misschien de historie, maar bij de nieuwe banen in bijvoorbeeld Miami of het Midden-Oosten zijn de voorzieningen vele malen beter. Dat vormt voor de Formule 1 een ultiem drukmiddel om de traditionele circuits te dwingen om daarin mee te gaan, vandaar dat Spa-Francorchamps nu een grondige verbouwing doorvoert.

Rossi neemt geen blad voor de mond. "De nieuwe circuits leggen de lat alsmaar hoger wat betreft infrastructuur en randvoorwaarden. Hierdoor ogen de traditionele banen gedateerd en armetierig. Het is fantastisch om Spa-Francorchamps, Silverstone en Monza te bezoeken en ik hou van die races, maar ze kunnen niet op hun lauweren rusten. Anders lopen ze het risico hun plekje op de kalender te verliezen."

De Formule 1-kalender is de laatste jaren uitgedijd naar 23 Grands Prix en dat schuurt wel tegen het maximaal haalbare aan, vindt Rossi. Dus voordat nieuwe locaties kunnen worden toegevoegd, zal de sport eerst afscheid moeten nemen van circuits die op dit moment nog wel op het schema prijken.

    Maar bah... Nieuwbouw kan nooit op tegen historisch en authentiek. Monza, Interlagos, Spa, Silverstone ogen juist ècht.

      Het zijn ook races waar altijd wel "iets" gebeurt. "Iets" wat je op de andere, nieuwere, circuits niet ziet. Bovendien maakt het niet uit of je van een houten bord of een gouden bord eet. Wat dat aan gaat zijn zulke populistische commentaren van een persoon die er niks over te zeggen heeft, niks anders dan dat; populistisch geneuzel om zieltjes te winnen. Of in dit geval; te verliezen.

      Gebeurde er veel dan, in Abu Dhabi? Het enige dat er gebeurde was een safety car situatie die voor spanning, sensatie en controverse zorgde. Alle aanpassingen aan de baan hebben niks extra's opgeleverd.

    Een modern circuit zonder de fans is een lege huls.
    Kijk Zandvoort, outdated maar met wat vrolijke vlaggen, banieren en andere opsmuk en met 100% bezetting die voor één succes coureur komen hebben ze bestaansrecht.

    Maar wat als de spiegeltjes en kralen op zijn dan valt Zandvoort weer in dat rijtje van armetierig.

    Ik heb binnen heel korte tijd een heel grote hekel aan meneer Rossi gekregen. Wil die idioot zich even lekker met zijn eigen armetierige renstal met gedateerde power unit gaan richten?!

    23 races in een jaar vind ik heerlijk, want elk weekend zonder GP is een minder weekend. Al wordt er hier thuis door een zekere jongedame anders over gedacht. Maar goed, met zoveel races heb je ook meer banen nodig, dus daarom gedoog ik de zandbakken ook wel. Het gaat alleen wel om de mix, want die oude banen is het DNA van F1, net zoals Ferrari en McLaren dat zijn. Het onderliggende punt van dit artikel is natuurlijk legitiem, ja moet wel zorgen dat de oude banen qua faciliteiten meegaan met de huidige vraag. Zandvoort is gelukkig een goed voorbeeld hoe dit ook met een heel oude baan heel goed kan.

      De oude banen zoals Zandvoort en Spa-Francorchamps zijn prima in mooie staat te houden zonder daarbij het karakter van het circuit aan te tasten.
      Probleem is dat de renovaties vaak gepaard gaan met bepaalde aanpassingen die het circuit per definitie minder leuk maken.
      Neem bijvoorbeeld het verpesten van de Bus-stop chicane op Spa

      Eens, dat kan prima samen gaan met het karakter van de baan behouden. Die busstop-chicane was wel karakteristiek voor de baan, maar met de huidige wagens (lees; snelheden) is de huidige oplossing beter.

      De kom-bochten op Zandvoort vind ik echt een toevoeging, beetje jammer alleen dat de FIA dan op vrijdag toch besluit om DRS niet toe te staan voor die laatste bocht.. Maar dat is sowieso de schuld van Masi.

    Veel van die oudere circuits liggen juist in mooie natuur en worden omringd door pittoreske dorpjes. En stel je een hypermodern circuit in Brazilië voor, laat ze van dat geld (zieken) huizen bouwen

      Ben een paar keer naar de Moto GP op Brno geweest, waar destijds zo'n beetje alle infrastrctuur op instorten stond. Maar god wat is dat een fantastisch old skool circuit, om over de prachtige omgeving nog maar te zwijgen. Allemaal leuk en aardig die moderne circuits waar alles er perfect bijligt, maar ik geef daar echt helemaal niks om.
