Albon kende roerige tijden: "Slechtst voorbereide coureur ooit!"

Aankomend seizoen keert Alexander Albon weer terug in de Formule 1. Zijn comeback past bij zijn zeer hobbelige Formule 1-carrière. De Britse Thai gaat rijden voor Williams nadat er geen plek meer voor hem was bij Red Bull Racing, na een jaar aan de zijlijn mag hij dus zijn kunsten weer aan de wereld gaan tonen.

Albon was in 2020 nog de tweede man bij Red Bull. Maar de Thai viel tegen en kon teamgenoot Max Verstappen niet bijhouden. Hij werd na het seizoen aan de kant geschoven en vervangen door Sergio Perez. Het was tekenend voor zijn roerige Formule 1-loopbaan. Hij debuteerde in 2019 bij Toro Rosso nadat hij last minute werd weggeplukt bij het Formule E-team van Nissan e.dams. Na een half jaar Toro Rosso werd hij al gepromoveerd naar het topteam van Red Bull.

Last minute

Het was een bizarre periode voor Albon. Hij dacht de zekerheid te hebben van het Formule E-contract maar mocht ineens toch zijn droom najagen in de Formule 1. In de podcast van Motorsport Magazine legt hij uit hoe hij die periode beleefde: "Het was allemaal heel last minute. Ik wil niet teveel over details praten maar het was nogal lastig. Ik zat vast aan Nissan en daardoor kon ik niet simpel overstappen van de Formule E naar de Formule 1."

Slecht voorbereid

De hele situatie zorgde ervoor dat Albon zonder enige ervaring in de Toro Rosso moest klimmen. Hij weet nog hoe hij die periode ervaarde: "Ik was één van de slechtst voorbereide Formule 1-coureurs ooit. Iedereen heeft wel eens wat getest voordat ze de Formule 1 betreden. Mijn eerste test was echter de eerste wintertest in Barcelona. Ik spinde toen gelijk in bocht 4 en vroeg mij af waar ik was beland."

Dus Albon is slechts een voorbereide coureur. Of is hij de slechtst voorbereide coureur ooit. Of is hij een slechte voorbereid coureur. Hmmm we klopt iets niet aan die titel. Spelvautje !
