McLaren neemt risico's om performance te verbeteren

Het team van McLaren is de afgelopen jaren bezig met een flinke opmars. De legendarische Britse renstal was in een diep moeras gezakt maar langzamerhand klimmen ze uit de penarie. Afgelopen jaar beleefde de opmars een hoogtepunt, Daniel Ricciardo wist te winnen in Italië en dat smaakte naar meer.

Aankomend seizoen wil McLaren dan ook weer meedoen om de knikkers. Er gaan dit jaar immers nieuwe reglementen in waardoor iedereen praktisch op nul begint. Voor de oranje renstal is dit een uitgelezen kans om weer mee te gaan doen om de overwinningen. Bij McLaren zijn ze zich hier zeer bewust van en men wil toeslaan.

Reserve-onderdelen

Om het grote doel te bereiken neemt McLaren enkele opvallende risico's. In een interview met de eigen persafdeling doet operationeel directeur Piers Thynne het uit de doeken: "We fabriceren dit jaar minder reserve-onderdelen. Dat is een cultuurverandering maar heeft geeft ons meer flexibiliteit om updates uit te voeren. Het is een moeilijke beslissing maar we doen dit zodat we ruimte hebben in het budget om meer performance te leveren."

Bahrein

Coureurs Lando Norris en Daniel Ricciardo zullen dus hun wagens op de baan moeten houden. Ze kunnen daarnaast wel rekenen op meer upgrades. Zelfs bij de seizoensopener in Bahrein zijn deze er al: "We weten dat een goede performance bij de eerste race zeer belangrijk is. We leveren daar dan ook ons eerste upgradepakket en we verwachten dat er nog veel meer gaan volgen,"

Het gaat hier bij alle teams meer dan ooit updates regenen. Door de nieuwe reglementen zullen de teams allemaal wel met eigen slimmigheden komen die teams van elkaar vastleggen op de gevoelige plaat voor analyse en het mogelijke copy-paste werk.
En het testen gaat uiteraard heel veel informatie opleveren om de auto's te verbeteren richting de eerste race. Overeenkomst tussen de auto's in de preseason test en de eerste race zal dit seizoen het chassis en de asbak zijn. De rest zal nog wel de nodige aanpassingen krijgen verwacht ik.

Ik vraag me af of er veel updates komen gedurende het seizoen want bijv. Binotto gaf laatst nog aan dat er weinig speelruimte is i.v.m. de budgetcap.
