Alpine gooit AI in de strijd: "We simuleren en analyseren steeds meer"

Veel teams willen aankomend seizoen profiteren van de gloednieuwe reglementen die gaan gelden. Dankzij het nieuwe regelboek zal iedereen praktisch op nul beginnen en daardoor zijn de kansen redelijk gelijk. Het is een uitgelezen kans om de stap naar de top te zetten voor ambitieuze teams zoals Alpine.

De Franse renstal beschikt over een aardig budget en het juiste personeel. Coureurs Fernando Alonso en Esteban Ocon lieten zich afgelopen jaar regelmatig op een positieve manier zien. Ocon won zelfs op verrassende wijze de Hongaarse Grand Prix. Alonso keerde terug om te jagen op nieuwe successen en was redelijk succesvol. In Qatar eindigde hij bijvoorbeeld op het podium.

Simuleren & analyseren

Maar diep van binnen droomt Alonso vanzelfsprekend van veel grotere successen. Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi denkt dat er zeker meer in het vat zit. De ambitieuze CEO spreekt zich uit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "We hebben nu voor zo'n 5 tot 10 jaar de stabiliteit op financieel gebied van de Renault Group. Daarbij komt ook de komende activa. In de Formule 1 testen we steeds minder maar we simuleren en analyseren steeds meer."

AI

Deze nieuwe belangrijke factoren kunnen zomaar in het voordeel van de Franse renstal uitpakken. Rossi wrijft zich dan ook in zijn handen: "Wij beschikken als Renault Group over de beste AI machine learning wetenschappers. Dit zetten we al ruim twintig jaar in op bijvoorbeeld ontwikkelingsgebied. Dit kunnen we dus ook gebruiken voor onze strategie of voor een data-analyse. Dit is bruikbaar als je de tegenstanders bij wilt halen."

Het is wel heel mooi computer simulatie en 24/7 draaiende systemen. Ik vraag mij af, wat co2 beter is. De seasonstest die teams vroeger deden of de systemen die nu 24/7 aan het draaien zijn. HEt zijn niet alleen de servers, computers. het is ook simulator zelf. De programeurs die de programma's steeds beter maken etc. etc. Hier gaat ook een hoop energie in zitten.

  Die servers draaien toch, die mensen leven toch dus die uitstoot is er al. Dan kan je er maar beter gebruik van maken om je doel te bereiken.

Dat ze bij Renault de beste machine learning experts hebben. Denk toch echt dat die voor veel geld voor bedrijven als Google en Microsoft aan het werk zijn.
