Mercedes aan de slag met E10-brandstof: "Grootste verrassing sinds 2014"

Aankomend seizoen gaat er veel veranderen in de Formule 1. Er gaan gloednieuwe reglementen gelden waardoor de teams voor compleet nieuwe uitdagingen staan. Het chassis van elk team zal compleet veranderen maar ook andere gedeeltes van de wagens zullen enorm gaan veranderen in het aankomende seizoen.

Zo zal er onder de kap het één en ander veranderen. De teams rijden in principe met dezelfde motoren maar er zal wel wat veranderen. Door het nieuwe chassis moeten de teams helemaal opnieuw uitvogelen wat de perfecte plaatsing voor de Power Unit is. Daarnaast krijgen zo ook nog eens te maken met een gloednieuwe brandstof. In de jacht naar een duurzame aandrijving lanceert de sport dit jaar de E10-brandstof.

Bio-ethanol

De nieuwe brandstof zal voor tien procent bestaan uit bio-ethanol. Dit zorgt ervoor dat de teams weer voor een gloednieuwe uitdaging staan. Ook bij het topteam van Mercedes zullen ze aan de slag moeten met deze verandering. Motoren-bons Hywel Thomas legt het bij Motorsport.com uit: "Op motorisch vlak is dit zelfs een van de allergrootste veranderingen sinds de invoering van de hybride motoren in 2014."

Verplicht

Biobrandstof is niet helemaal nieuw voor Mercedes. Maar de bio-ethanol is wel compleet nieuw voor de Duitse renstal. Thomas verduidelijkt het maar eens: "Tijdens het hybride tijdperk reden we al met bio-elementen in onze brandstof. We waren vrij in de keuze van welke middelen we daarvoor zouden gebruiken maar dit jaar is dat weer anders. Het percentage bio-elementen is gestegen en bio-ethanol is verplicht."

  Terug op Mercedes. Ben benieuwd vorig jaar hadden ze al 200% nodig aan het aantal motoren om een van de twee titels te kunnen pakken. Ben benieuwd wat invloed van de brandstof gaat hebben op de betrouwbaarheid van de motoren.
  
  Er is bewijs dat E10 op de langere termijn slecht is voor bepaalde rubberen slangetjes in normale auto’s.

  E10 is zo'n typische papieren politieke methode om aan de milieu eisen te kunnen voldoen.
  Bedacht aan een bureau, niet denkende aan de gevolgen.
  E10 is schadelijk voor de motoren, droogt slangen en pakkingen uit, en zet koolstof af waardoor de levensduur van de motoren drastisch achteruit gaan.
  Ik adviseer dan ook aan eenieder om gewoon E5 te blijven tanken.

  Als je ouwe meuk rijdt, dan kun je beter 98 tanken, vooral carburateur motoren. De nieuwere auto’s zijn op E10 aangepast.
  Voor de purist is 98 een alternatief, omdat ze zichzelf daar beter bij voelen.
