Sam Michael volgt Patrick Head op als voorzitter FIA Safety Commission

Sam Michael is sinds eind 2014 niet meer actief geweest in de Formule 1. De jaren hiervoor had de Australier een belangrijke positie bij McLaren en Williams gehad, maar vertrok naar zijn thuisland om daar in de autosport te gaan werken.

De terugkeer van Michael is echter aanstaande. De technisch directeur van weleer heeft namelijk Patrick Head vervangen als voorzitter van de Safety Commission van de FIA. Zoals gemeld door Motorsport.com zal Michael de taken overnemen aan het hoofd van de veiligheidsafdeling van de FIA, die werkt aan het verbeteren van de uitrusting die wordt gebruikt in alle formule klassen en het onderzoeken en analyseren van ongevallen om de veiligheid te verbeteren.

Michael kan teren op een uitgebreide carrière in de Formule 1, waarbij hij onder meer werkte voor Lotus, Williams en McLaren. Begonnen als Lotus-engenieur in 1993 stapte Michael over naar Jordan en later Williams, waar hij doorgroeide om technisch directeur te worden voordat hij overstapte naar McLaren om de functie van sportief directeur op zich te nemen, en vertrok in 2014.

Michael is niet nieuw in de wereld van veiligheid in de autosport, aangezien hij in 2017 adviseur werd van de onderzoek werkgroep van de FIA, die veiligheidsapparatuur beoordeelt als onderdeel van een bredere functieomschrijving.

Het jaar daarvoor was hij directeur geworden van het Australian Institute voor Motor Sport Safety. Michael stapt nu op naar de toppositie in de FIA Safety Commission, één van de vele benoemingen die voortkomen uit de eerste bijeenkomst van de World Motor Sport Council die plaatsvond onder leiding van de nieuwe FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
