Bahrein sluit megadeal: tot 2036 op Formule 1-kalender

Over een ruime maand begint het nieuwe Formule 1-seizoen met de Grand Prix van Bahrein. De race staat al sinds 2004 op de kalender en het was tevens de eerste Grand Prix in het Midden-Oosten. De race zorgde vaak voor enorme spektakelstukken en de sport was tevreden. Men blijft namelijk nog wel eventjes racen op het Bahrain International Circuit.

Vandaag maakte de Formule 1 namelijk bekend dat het contract met de race is verlengd tot 2036. Dat betekent dat men nog lang niet af is van de race in het Midden-Oosten. Dit jaar wordt op het circuit ook de tweede wintertest verreden, de baan wordt dus steeds meer een thuisbasis voor de sport.

Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali is in ieder geval zeer tevreden met de megadeal. In een persbericht spreekt hij zich er enthousiast over uit: "Ik ben verheugd met het feit dat we tot 2036 blijven racen op het Bahrain International Circuit. Sinds 2004 hebben we enkele fantastische races gezien in Sakhir en we kunnen niet wachten om hier weer terug te keren voor de start van 2022, een nieuw hoofdstuk voor de sport."
