Ben Sulayem zag Wolff en Horner goed optrekken: "Het was Valentijnsdag"

Aan het begin van deze week staken de teambazen en de hoge heren van de sport de koppen bij elkaar. Men vergaderde namelijk met de F1 Commission en daar werden enkele knopen doorgehakt. Zo nam men beslissingen over de sprintkwalificaties en de puntentelling bij onvolledige races.

Ook besprak men de veelbesproken seizoensfinale in Abu Dhabi. Tijdens deze bepalende race nam wedstrijdleider Michael Masi enkele discutabele beslissingen omtrent een late safety car-fase. Hierdoor kreeg Max Verstappen in de allerlaatste ronde de kans om zijn titelrivaal Lewis Hamilton te verschalken. Hij slaagde in zijn opzet en werd wereldkampioen. Hierna barstte er een stroom van kritiek los en autosportfederatie FIA nam het zeer serieus. Men begon een diepgravend onderzoek.

Integriteit

Tijdens de meeting met de F1 Commission besprak FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem de conclusies van het onderzoek met de teams. De resultaten werden echter nog niet gedeeld aangezien Ben Sulayem de feedback van de teams nog gaat toepassen. Na afloop van de vergadering was hij er tegenover Sky Sports nogal duidelijk over: "De informatie zal snel bekend worden gemaakt. Maar ,zoals ik al eerder had gezegd, de integriteit van de FIA zal intact blijven."

Valentijnsdag

Hoofdrolspelers in de Abu Dhabi-affaire waren Red Bull Racing en Mercedes. Beide teams vochten op verbaal vlak een ferme strijd uit tijdens het afgelopen seizoen. Teambazen Christian Horner en Toto Wolff waren aanwezig bij de meeting en volgens Ben Sulayem verliep dat vlotjes. De president spreekt zich grappend uit: "Ze zaten op één lijn. Ik denk dat het kwam door Valentijnsdag, haha. Ze zaten vlak bij elkaar en ze waren in een goede bui, dus dat was goed. Ik had meer spanning verwacht maar de harmonie tussen die twee was goed."

Die "spanning" van vorig jaar was gewoon gespeeld om kijkers naar de nieuwe Net-flix serie te loken waarvan biede geld ontvangen.
Die telefoneren op de maandag na de race met elkaar om zich samen te amuseren met de artikels die in de diverse media verschijnen.

  Nou, ik ben evenwel overtuigd dat een groot stuk show is. Niet zo zeer voor de Netflix-serie, maar eerder om publieke opinie en druk uit te oefenen. Beide teambazen zijn daar zeer sterk in en proberen dit te gebruiken. Een echte ruzie is er volgens mij nooit geweest en ik denk dat beide heren goed genoeg weten hoe het spelletje werk om achter gesloten deuren best vriendelijk naar elkaar toe te zijn.

Het was een lieflijk tafereel. Toto kwam met een giga bos oranje tulpen aanzetten met daarbij een mega ultrapack Merci chocolaatjes. Christian had zijn ukelele meegenomen, ging op zijn knieën zitten en begon spontaan "my funny valentine' te zingen. Het bleef nog lang onrustig in die vergaderzaal.
