Williams presenteerde vorige week de nieuwe FW44 als wagen voor het nieuwe F1-seizoen. De wagen roept bij veel oudere fans een 'Simtek-gevoel' op, vanwege de kleurstelling, maar ongetwijfeld ook vanwege de positie waarin het team al enkele seizoenen verkeerd.

Het jaar 2022 zal een kritische worden voor Williams en haar fans, aangezien het haar opmars richting de top van het veld wil voortzetten. De nieuwe reglementswijzigingen van 2022, waardoor de wagens er compleet anders uitzien, spreken mogelijk in het voordeel van het team uit Grove.

Hoewel het team een Showcar gebruikte voor hun presentatie namen ze later op de dag de echte FW44 mee naar het circuit van Silverstone voor zijn eerste shakedown-run. De beelden die werden gemaakt tijdens de shakedown zijn inmiddels vrijgegeven, waarbij er onboard beeldmateriaal is van Nicholas Latifi die op een zeer nat Silverstone de eerste meters mocht rijden.

Uit de beelden aan boord kunnen we zien dat Williams de benadering heeft behouden om het dashboard boven het stuur te monteren, iets wat hoofd wagenprestaties Dave Robson, vorig seizoen besprak. Robson zei destijds dat Williams had overwogen om het dashboard in het stuur te bouwen zoals andere teams, maar besloot dat het niet echt de moeite waard was en dat het absoluut prima is om het zo te laten.

Een ander opvallend verschil is de grootte van de wielen, die Pirelli voor 2022 heeft geüpgraded naar 18 inch in plaats van de 13 inch-compounds van de afgelopen jaren. Veel coureurs voorspellen al dat deze grotere wielen, samen met de spatborden die ook nieuw zijn voor 2022, een probleem kunnen zijn als het gaat om het zicht op bepaalde circuits.
