Trotse Zhou verwacht veel Chinese fans: "Ook omdat er daar dit jaar geen race is"

Vanmiddag wordt er een klein stukje Formule 1-historie geschreven op het asfalt van Barcelona. Guanyu Zhou is namelijk ingestapt bij Alfa Romeo om de middag van de tweede testdag voor zijn rekening te nemen. Hiermee maakt de Chinees zijn officieuze debuut in de Formule 1, hij is de eerste coureur uit zijn land die het tot de koningsklasse heeft geschopt.

Zhou is de eerste Chinees die gaat debuteren in de Formule 1. In het verleden reed er wel een landgenoot ,Ma Qing Hua, wat trainingen maar hij stond nooit aan de start van een race. Zhou gaat dus geschiedenis schrijven maar hij heeft er wel lang op moeten wachten. Alfa Romeo liet gisteren testcoureur Robert Kubica rijden en gistermiddag en vanochtend zat Valtteri Bottas achter het stuur.

Doorbraak

De Chinese Alfa-coureur is in ieder geval heel erg trots op zijn aanstaande debuut. Zhou krijgt veel media-aandacht en in gesprek met de media-afdeling van de Formule 1 spreekt hij zich uit: "Ik denk dat het altijd goed is als je de eerste bent die een doorbraak maakt. Natuurlijk, de autosport kwam in mijn land veel later op dan in andere landen. Het is dan ook heel erg lastig om de autosport-ladder te betreden tot de plek waarop ik nu ben."

Trots

Zhou heeft een lange weg moeten bewandelen om te komen waar hij nu is. De Chinese debutant is echter wel een enorm trots man: "Ik en mijn familie hebben toch wat compromissen moeten nemen maar het team steunde mij. Maar nu ben ik in de Formule 1 en ik ben heel erg trots op mijn land en ik denk dat veel mensen naar races willen komen om mij te zien. Ook omdat er dit jaar geen Chinese Grand Prix is."

Was Ho-Pin Tung niet ooit testcoureur voor Renault? Hij reed ook onder de Chinese vlag. Ik weet alleen
niet of hij in trainingen heeft gereden of enkel in tests.

  Dan is Zhou na vandaag dus nog niet verder gekomen dan Ho-Pin Tung, hoewel dat ongetwijfeld snel zal veranderen.
  
  Zhou heeft het overigens zeker niet onverdienstelijk gedaan in de F2. Niet de allerbeste coureur van het veld, maar wel een hele goede.
