Maleisië of Portugal ook serieuze opties om Rusland op F1-kalender te vervangen

De Grand Prix van Rusland gaat vanwege de oorlog in Oekraïne niet door. De F1 heeft na overleg met de teams de race in Sotsji geschrapt, waardoor het op zoek gaat naar een alternatief. Daar heeft de organisatie nog even de tijd voor aangezien de race in Rusland voor eind september op de F1-kalender stond.

Turkije werd genoemd als voornaamste vervanger, mede omdat heel kort op de F1 ticketsite al toegangskaarten te koop waren. Deze werd echter weer snel offline gehaald. Naast Turkije zijn inmiddels ook veel andere circuits die interesse hebben om Rusland te vervangen. Dat komt mede door de interesse in de Formule 1 in het algemeen, maar ook door de 'back-up lijst' sinds corona.

China en Maleisië

Aangezien eind september de Aziatische toer begint van de koningsklasse is het niet ondenkbaar dat China of Maleisië terugkeren op de kalender. China is vanwege corona afwezig op de agenda van dit jaar maar wil graag zo spoedig mogelijk terugkeren, zeker omdat er voor het eerst een Chinees in de F1 racet; Guanyu Zhou. Maleisië wordt ook genoemd omdat het Sepang circuit altijd prachtige races op heeft geleverd. Daar komt bij dat het ook al gelinkt werd aan een terugkeer op de kalender toen de Grand Prix van Vietnam niet doorging en er voor die race een vervanger nodig was.

Portugal

Uiteraard wordt ook Portugal genoemd. Dat land debuteerde twee jaar geleden op de zwaar aangepaste coronakalender van 2020 en wist in 2021 nog een keer terug te keren. Het leverde leuke races op maar de coureurs waren vooral lovend over het circuit en de vele hoogteverschillen.

Rusland vervangen is geen probleem

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali zegt in gesprek met F1i.com dat het vervangen van Rusland geen groot probleem is omdat er veel belangstelling is: "Om specifiek over de situatie van dit jaar te praten, vanwege de Russische situatie, kan ik alleen maar bevestigen dat we de afgelopen jaren al hebben bewezen zeer flexibel te zijn en geen enkel probleem te hebben om mogelijke oplossingen daarvoor te vinden."

Alles beter dan Turkije als serieuze vervanger te willen zien.
Niets ten nadele van het Turkse circuit, maar als je de 'menselijkheid' als argument gebruikt om niet naar Rusland te gaan kun je natuurlijk niet uitwijken naar een land dat net zo instabiel en potentieel gevaarlijk is.
Maar ja, zo ging de F1 ook ineens naar Qatar....
Toch zie ik een trend waarin er stiekem toch steeds meer wordt teruggevallen op stabiele Westerse (Europese) circuits zoals dat vanwege de Corona pandemie is ingezet.

  Ik heb Turkije nog nooit horen dreigen met een kernoorlog. Qua mensenrechten is het geen fraai land maar ik word een beetje moe om steeds andere landen te vergelijken met Rusland terwijl wat Rusland nu doet van een heel andere orde is.

  Turkije ia nooit een issue geweest en moeten we dus nu ook niet als een issue maken. Mooi circuit, dus prima als vervanger.
  Maar Maleisie is ook niet slecht. Heb ik altijd een mooi circuit gevonden.

  Zou kunnen, China wil Covid tot de laatste snik het land uitjagen, wat uiteraard nooit gaat lukken, is maar goed dat ze in de EU wakker werden, ook te laat, maar leef er gewoon mee.

  Ik weet niet, we hebben regen wel eens zien zorgen voor een epic race, bekendste voorbeeld was natuurlijk 2001. Niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de magistrale race van Jos.
  
  Maar ik meen me ook grands pix te herinneren waarbij er zoveel regen viel dat men nauwelijks aan racen toekwam, en er voornamelijk veel/lang gewacht werd
