Formule 1-coureurs maken statement tegen oorlog in Oekraïne

Tijdens de vorige wintertest in Barcelona werd de wereld opgeschrikt door de oorlog in Oekraïne. Rusland viel het buurland binnen en er was ineens weer oorlog in Europa. Wereldwijd volgde er zeer veel sancties tegen het land van president Vladimir Poetin, ook in de sportwereld. Zo werd de Russische Grand Prix geschrapt en werd Nikita Mazepin ontslagen door Haas.

De situatie in Oekraïne raakt veel mensen in het hart. Ook de Formule 1-coureurs steunen de Oekraïners en men roept Rusland op om de oorlog te beëindigen. Een dag voor de start van de tweede wintertest in Bahrein maakte coureursvakbond GPDA dan ook een statement. Bijna alle coureurs poseerden voor een foto waarop ze allemaal een shirt droegen met 'No War' erop.

Alleen Lewis Hamilton en comeback-kid Kevin Magnussen ontbraken. Magnussen was op het moment van de foto nog niet officieel aangekondigd als Haas-coureur dus zijn afwezigheid was logisch. Het ontbreken van de maatschappelijk betrokken Hamilton deed echter wel de nodige wenkbrauwen fronsen. Hamilton had echter vertraging met zijn vlucht waardoor hij niet aanwezig kon zijn bij het fotomoment.

    Een privéjet met vertraging, het zit Lewis niet mee. Moest Sir Lewis een paar uren wachten in het toestel tot de banden waren opgepompt of het lampje van de wc werd gerepareerd ?
