Testupdate dag 2 Bahrein: Ocon sneller dan Leclerc, Williams in de brand

De ochtendsessie van de tweede testdag in Bahrein is voltooid met Esteban Ocon in de Alpine die als snelste de sessie af wist te sluiten. Hij reed iets meer dan een tiende sneller dan Leclerc in de Ferrari met Verstappen op de derde plaats.

Updates

Heel veel nieuwe updates zijn nog niet zichtbaar op de wagens. Dat is voor een deel opmerkelijk te noemen aangezien Adrian Newey gisteren vertelde dat Red Bull Racing de RB18 zou voorzien van visuele updates die duidelijk zichtbaar zouden zijn. Die updates zijn nochtans niet gespot op de Red Bull-wagen van de Nederlander.

Bij McLaren blijven de problemen aanhouden. Lando Norris reed slechts 29 ronden, een mager aantal net als gisteren. Het team heeft problemen met de koeling van de remmen, wat zorgt voor vertraging van het programma. Norris is niet tevreden en mopperde gisteren al dat het probleem niet snel opgelost zal worden. In de paddock in Bahrein gaan suggesties dat er in de fabriek in Woking hard wordt gewerkt aan een oplossing die later vandaag of misschien pas morgen op de wagen kan zitten.

Brand bij Williams

Ook Williams zit flink in de problemen. Nicholas Latifi reed slechts 12 ronden en meer zullen het er voorlopig ook niet worden. Zijn Williams kende eveneens koelproblemen van de remmen, maar dan aan de achterkant. Dat zorgde ervoor dat de remmen in de fik kwamen te staan, de wielophanging afbrak en hij achterwaarts het circuit afschoof.

Doordat de brandblussers niet meteen paraat waren kreeg de brand die ontstond langer de tijd dan men bij Williams wilde, waarbij zelfs de band explodeerde. Het team heeft veel te repareren en zal voorlopig niet kunnen rijden.

Zandstorm

We zijn de woestijn en dus licht een zandstorm altijd op de loer. De F1-teams zijn door de FIA gewaarschuwd dat het vanmiddag rekening moet houden met een zandstorm, wat ook al te zien is aan het einde van de ochtendsessie. Het zicht is beduidend minder en waar de temperatuur eerder vanochtend nog 35 graden was, is die inmiddels gedaald tot onder de 30.

Nou, gezellig. Vanmiddag wordt een zandstorm verwacht. Ze hadden nu al minder zicht.
Bovendien komen in de loop van de dag steeds nieuwe onderdelen op de RB18 en de
bedoeling was dat ze de motor vandaag een stuk harden zouden laten lopen, ook van SAT.
Zal weinig van terechtkomen vanwege de harde wind en windstoten en al dat zand.

  Nee, niemand van de analisten heeft al updates gezien . Toch zaten er wel nieuwe onderdelen op, maar voor ons zeker niet te zien.
  Wel zijn er een aantal grote pakketten bezorgd bij de garage vanmorgen met onderdelen.

  Ik heb wat onboards gekeken. Verstappen zijn helm bounce-te minder het beeld in op het rechte stuk. Ook leek ondanks de harde wind het onderstuureffect minder dan giesteren. Ook leek hij de rondes makkelijker te doen dan Perez gisteren. Heb het niet over de snelheid, maar meer over de lijnen rijden. Verstappen zat ook duidelijk de limiet van het remmen te zoeken. Mij lijkt dat ze ook daar aan werkten.
  
  Ik gok dat er toch wel updates zijn. Ze deden ook telkens een paar rondes, waarna Verstappen weer een tijdje binnen stond. Speculatie omdat ik niet in de pitbox kan kijken. Maar ik gok dat er telkens wat werd veranderd op/aan de auto.
