Vettel verklaart vredeshelm: "Het is een zeer sterk teken"

De oorlog in Oekraïne is ook in de Formule 1-wereld het gesprek van de dag. De sport heeft enkele verregaande maatregelen genomen tegen Rusland maar daarnaast hebben de coureurs ook de handen ineen geslagen. Voorafgaand de tweede wintertest in Bahrein kwamen bijna alle coureurs tezamen om een statement te maken tegen de oorlog.

Aston Martin-coureur Sebastian Vettel ondernam ook zelf actie. De maatschappelijk betrokken Duitser was al één van de eerste coureurs die zich uitsprak tegen de oorlog en in Bahrein reed hij rond met een bijzondere helm. Op zijn witte helm staat de Oekraïense vlag, de tekst 'No War', een vredesduif en de tekst van het nummer 'Imagine' van John Lennon.

Eenheid

Vettel zelf vindt het jammer dat hij een statement moet gaan maken. De viervoudig wereldkampioen staat volledig achter zijn hoofddeksel. Tegenover Motorsport.com spreekt hij zich duidelijk uit: "Ik had gehoopt dat ik dit ontwerp niet had hoeven gebruiken omdat er geen noodzaak was. Het is een zeer sterk teken, gewoon om steun te betuigen. Alle coureurs zijn woensdag bijeen gekomen om van dit moment gebruik te maken. Om te laten zien dat wij een eenheid vormen en dat we stelling nemen."

Cyprus

De Aston Martin-coureur kreeg veel lof voor zijn nobele actie. Toch zette een detail op zijn helm kwaad bloed bij Cyprus. Op de rand van de helm bevinden zich namelijk ook alle vlaggen van de wereld. Men had blijkbaar niet goed opgelet want ook de vlag van de niet erkende Turkse Republiek van Noord-Cyprus bevond zich op de helm. Vettel is zich er nu bewust van: "Aan de rand is er de kans om alle vlaggen te plaatsen, als klein symbool. Ik had niet alle vlaggen doorgenomen maar blijkbaar waren er problemen. Ik heb het kleine stickertje verwijderd omdat mensen er boos over werden. Ik denk dat dit voorbij schiet aan de boodschap."

Mooi gebaar. Met zijn persoonlijke vermogen had ik eerder een Bayraktar TB2 voor de Oekraïners aangeschaft maar ach, Vlad heeft zichzelf al hopeloos in de stront vastgedraaid en een Bayraktar meer of minder zal niet meer zoveel uitmaken. Dan is de Oekraïnse vlag op de helm een goede tweede keuze. :)

Als Turkije nou eens met een zeer geweldadige speciale operatie Cyprus had geannexeerd had men zich niet druk hoeven te maken over een niet erkend vlaggetje.
Dit gedoe heeft altijd bestaan en zal altijd zo blijven.
Bevolkingen verplaatsen vanwege diverse redenen, en zo vermengen culturen, religie en afkomsten totdat men deze terug gaat claimen en een symbolisch vlaggetje ineens de aanleiding geeft tot de idiote dingen waartoe alleen de mensheid in staat lijkt te zijn.

  Alle vlaggen staan er op de helm ook die van Rusland. Waardoor je dus alsnog de hand uitsteekt naar Rusland voor de toekomst.

  Tja, ik vind het wel mooi wat Seb heeft gedaan. En bij een statement/steunbetuiging strijk je nu eenmaal een andere partij tegen de haren in, het één gaat niet zonder het ander.
