Gemiste bandentest voelbaar voor Williams: "Moeten veel leren"

Morgen draaien de heren coureurs de baan op voor de eerste vrije training van het gloednieuwe seizoen. In Bahrein zal men meer leren over de slagvolgorde, de nieuwe reglementen zorgen immers voor veel onduidelijkheid. Niet alleen op aerodynamisch vlak is er veel veranderd, ook de banden zijn compleet nieuw.

Vorig jaar kregen veel teams al de kans om met de nieuwe banden van Pirelli te testen. De nieuwe rubbertjes zijn voor veel coureurs en teams dus helemaal niet nieuw. Toch is er één team dat nog veel moet leren over de nieuwe banden, het gaat om Williams. De Britse ploeg was namelijk de enige renstal die niet konden testen met de nieuwe banden en daardoor hebben ze een kleine achterstand op de concurrentie.

Leren

In Bahrein moeten de Britten nog veel leren over de nieuwe banden. Men doet er echter niet moeilijk over en ze kaarten het zelf aan. Teambaas Jost Capito spreekt zich uit bij het Duitse RTL: "We gaan naar de eerste race om heel erg veel te leren. We moeten bizar veel gaan leren over de nieuwe banden. Dat is zeer zeker het belangrijkste ding om te leren voor ons."

Hiërarchie

Toch maakt Capito zich geen zorgen over een te grote achterstand op de concurrentie. De teambaas denkt dat de nieuwe reglementen voor veel veranderingen gaan zorgen. "Er zijn zoveel verschillende concepten en interpretaties van de regels, dat kan een verschillende effect hebben op de verschillende circuits. Dus dat betekent dat er misschien helemaal geen vaste hiërarchie is in het middenveld."

Mercedes had in het begin veel moeite met de pirelli band. De Mercedes was vaak snel in de kwalificatie maar in de race rookte zij de bandjes op. Waardoor de vruchten niet altijd geplukt werden.

Die bandentesten van de andere teams waren toch maximaal 1 dag? Ze hebben nu allemaal 6 dagen wintertesten gehad met de definitieve banden (vorig seizoen tijdens de testen waren ze nog in ontwikkeling). Dus andere teams hebben er maximaal 7 dagen mee gereden (gereden werd in mule-cars en verzamelde data werd gedeeld met alle teams) en Williams heeft er 6 dagen mee gereden, dus ik kan me niet voorstellen dat ze hier daadwerkelijk serieus nadeel van ondervinden.

  Komend weekend moeten alle teams met de billen bloot, dus het indekken gaat alvast beginnen ;)

Ik vraag me af in hoeverre de bandentest van vorig jaar, met de 2021 spec auto, aan voordelen heeft opgeleverd. Tuurlijk, data, maar Pirelli heeft al gezegd dat de data van elke test met alle teams gedeeld wordt. Dus daar heeft Williams toegang toe.
De auto's van dit jaar zijn compleet anders qua aerodynamica, gewicht en ook wielbasis.
Het zal naar mijn bescheiden mening, waarin ik heel veel ook niet weet, wel meevallen.

Verder nog iets over Jost Capito: in Drive to Survive is hij goed in beeld gebracht, leuk om te zien wie die man is en hoe hij het team motiveert en naar voren wilt brengen. Hij zag al snel dat het team op diverse plekken wat ingedut is, niet scherp genoeg is en dat er wat posities gewisseld moeten worden. Hoewel hij uit de rallysport komt, denk ik dat hij dit team weer naar voren kan brengen. Het is wat dat betreft als elk bedrijf, het personeel maakt of kraakt het. En daar heeft hij volgens mij goede kijk op.
Hopelijk pakt het de komende jaren goed uit, Williams hoort verder vooraan te staan. Ookal is het alleen nog de naam Williams, en verder niet meer.

Ben ik de enige die bij rubbertjes aan iets anders denkt?

Wel goor om niet elke keer een nieuwe te gebruiken trouwens.

  Bij de F1 wordt het gebruik van rubbertjes sterk aangeraden om te voorkomen dat men last krijgt van SOA (Schuiven Over Asfalt). ;)
