Hülkenberg eerlijk: "Ben niet volledig wedstrijdfit"

Vandaag beleefde Nico Hülkenberg zijn vuurdoop met de gloednieuwe auto's onder de huidige reglementen. De populaire Duitse coureur hoorde gisteren pas dat hij mocht instappen bij Aston Martin nadat Sebastian Vettel positief testte op het coronavirus. Het is een grote uitdaging voor de 'Hulk' aangezien het alweer eventjes geleden is dat hij achter het stuur zat.

Hülkenberg begint langzamerhand naam te maken als vliegende invaller. De Duitser kwam eind 2019 zonder zitje te zitten en sindsdien vult hij zijn dagen met een enkele invalklus en commentaarwerk bij Servus TV. In 2020 mocht hij drie races opdraven bij het toenmalige Racing Point omdat Lance Stroll en Sergio Perez ook corona kregen.

Interessant

Nu mag hij dus weer in de cockpit kruipen en dat is een hele uitdaging. Tijdens de persconferentie op de vrijdagochtend verklaart hij de situatie. Hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsport.com: "Het is weer eens een interessante situatie. Ik pak het gewoon ronde voor ronde aan. Ik heb natuurlijk geen meter gereden tijdens de tests dus ik heb wat tijd nodig om het roest van mij af te schudden."

Fit

Hülkenberg had zijn invalklus niet zien aankomen dus hij heeft vooral in de simulator gezeten van de groene renstal. Hij geeft eerlijk toe dat de voorbereiding beter kon: "Ik ben niet geheel wedstrijdfit. Er zijn redelijk wat uitdagingen en het wordt echt een overload aan informatie. Ik ga gewoon instappen en wennen. Ik ben geruime tijd weg geweest en deze wagens zijn compleet nieuw. Het is geen makkelijke situatie."

  Ziet er idd naar uit dat Williams and AM achteraan gaan rijden, aangenaam verrast in de pace van Alfa en Alpine vooral Alpine had ik niet zien aankomen.
