Wedstrijdleider Freitas vijf GP's afwezig, Haywood vervanger

Dit weekend is de vuurdoop van de nieuwe wedstrijdleiding in de Formule 1. De vorige wedstrijdleider Michael Masi werd immers de deur gewezen na de controversiële seizoensfinale van vorig jaar. Masi wordt dit jaar afwisselend vervangen door Niels Wittich en Eduardo Freitas. Ze wisselen per twee Grands Prix de rollen af, eerst is Wittich de wedstrijdleider met ondersteuning van Freitas en dan andersom.

Dit weekend is Wittich de wedstrijleider maar Freitas is afwezig in Bahrein. Hij is namelijk ook nog steeds de wedstrijdleider in het WEC en dus moet hij daar als wedstrijdleider fungeren. Freitas zal dit jaar vijf maal een Grand Prix-weekend missen maar de FIA heeft een oplossing gevonden voor dit probleem. De ervaren Colin Haywood is namelijk teruggekeerd in de sport om Wittich te ondersteunen bij de wedstrijdleiding.

Haywood begon in 1994 in de Formule 1 en vervulde meerdere rollen binnen de sport. In 2004 krijg hij een rol ter ondersteuning van toenmalig wedstrijdleider Charlie Whiting. Na diens overlijden bleef Haywood actief binnen de wedstrijdleiding van de sport. In 2019 en 2020 hielp hij ook Masi bij diens taken als wedstrijdleider. Nu keert hij dus na een jaar afwezigheid weer terug.
