Russell tevreden met vierde plek: "Moeilijk weekend, goed resultaat"

George Russell heeft zijn eerste race als fulltime Mercedes-coureur met een aardige hand vol punten voltooid. De Britse coureur kende een teleurstellende kwalificatie maar vocht zich in de race aardig terug naar voren. Uiteindelijk kwam hij op een zeer goede vierde plaats over de finishlijn in Bahrein.

Russell kwam vlak achter zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton over de finish en dat resultaat was veel beter dan men had verwacht. Mercedes leek namelijk overduidelijk het derde team van de dag en men rekende niet op veel successen. De dubbele, onfortuinlijke uitvalbeurten van de Red Bulls zorgden er uiteindelijk voor dat men bij Mercedes een goed resultaat kon scoren.

Moeilijk weekend

Russell reed vrijwel de gehele race rond op de zesde plaats. In de slotfase profiteerde hij van het uitvallen van Verstappen en Perez. Tegenover zijn landgenoten van Sky Sports sprak hij zich uit: "We hadden zeker weten verwacht dat we de zesde plek konden pakken. We hebben het beste gemaakt van de uitvalbeurten van anderen. Ik ben zeker blij met de start, we wonnen wat plekjes maar we kennen onze grenzen. Het was een moeilijk weekend maar toch een goed resultaat."

Positief weekend

De nieuwbakken Mercedes-coureur is zich bewust van de tekortkomingen van zijn wagen. Russell weet dat een oplossing er niet snel zal zijn. Toch kijkt hij tevreden terug: "Ik denk dat het een positief weekend was, vooral met alle problemen in het achterhoofd. Ik denk dat we een halve seconde achterstand hebben in de kwalificatie. In de races liggen we een halve tot een hele seconde achter. Wij willen beter voor de dag komen."

  Gemaximeerd zoals dat heet. Mercedes reed een beetje in niemandsland, konden de top niet volgen, en er was geen echte bedreiging van achter.

Netjes, degelijk, maar niet opzienbarend. Lewis volgen dat kon Bottas al die jaren ook wel. Van Russell verwacht ik meer dat een 2e viool optreden.
