Allison maakt zich niet druk: "Had erger verwacht"

Mercedes heerste jarenlang over de Formule 1. De Duitse renstal won sinds 2014 alle constructeurstitels en bij de coureurs werden ze slechts één keer verslagen. Afgelopen jaar moest Lewis Hamilton immers de wereldtitel aan Max Verstappen laten. Dit jaar lijkt de Duitse gigant echter op achterstand rond te rijden.

Dit seizoen gelden er gloednieuwe reglementen en Mercedes lijkt daarvan de grootste verliezer te zijn. Tijdens de seizoensopener in Bahrein moest men toegeven dat Ferrari en Red Bull Racing toch echt verder zijn. Daarnaast leek de altijd zo krachtige krachtbron ineens een bron van zwakte. De Mercedessen waren niet de snelste en alle klantenteams kenden een waardeloos weekend onder het Bahreinse kunstlicht.

Oplossing

Toch zijn ze bij Mercedes redelijk opgewekt. Technisch directeur James Allison kijkt door een roze bril naar het afgelopen resultaat en alles wat komen gaat. In een terugblik op Bahrein op YouTube spreekt hij zich uit: "Qua tempo waren we ongeveer zes tienden langzamer dan de leiders. De realiteit is dat we tegen veel problemen aanlopen, maar die hebben ook allemaal een oplossing. Dat is een flinke uitdaging maar na de wintertests had ik erger gevreesd."

Vertrouwen

Allison ziet achter de schermen enkele positieve signalen en dat stelt hem gerust. Hij wil de noodtoestand dan ook niet uitroepen. "De verbeteringen die we hebben doorgevoerd tussen de tests en de race zijn misschien niet te zien voor de fans maar binnen het team heeft het zeker voor rust gezorgd. De manier waarop we met de problemen omgaan geeft mij het vertrouwen dat we snel met een competitieve auto rijden. We hopen in de komende twee of drie races weer mee te doen vooraan."

Ik denk dat de hoeveelheid drag die wordt veroorzaakt door traditionele sidepods flink overschat wordt.
Toen op vrijdag in Bahrein bij die Alpine de sidepod er af wapperde verbaasde ik me hoe leeg die sidepod eigenlijk was. Hierdoor denk dat alle teams een Mercedes achtige sidepod zouden ... [Lees verder]

    Met een competitieve auto rijd je automatisch snel. De realiteit was dat de Benz toch een stuk minder competitief was waardoor lewis en george ook een stuk minder snel reden ;)

      Ik blijf het frappant vinden dat ze met hun 'no sidepod, no drag' oplossing zo langzaam waren op de rechte stukken. Zou die PU dan toch een maatje te klein zijn voor de Honda's en Ferrari's?

      Toen op vrijdag in Bahrein bij die Alpine de sidepod er af wapperde verbaasde ik me hoe leeg die sidepod eigenlijk was. Hierdoor denk dat alle teams een Mercedes achtige sidepod zouden kunnen realiseren, maar dat voor veel teams het voordeel van iets minder drag, niet opweegt tegen het "kunnen spelen met de luchtstroom" over/onder en door die sidepods.

      Ja dat is een goed punt. Ik weet er helaas het fijne ook niet van, maar je zou toch denken dat hoe minder lucht door een radiator en om een sidepod heen moet, hoe beter het in ieder geval voor je straightline speed zou moeten zijn. Want altijd minder drag, dat lijkt me ook het hele principe van de W13.

      Grappig trouwens die preview van reacties onderaan het artikel. Of zie alleen ik dit? :)

      Hebben we geen amateur aerodynamicus op dit forum die hier eens in kan duiken?

      Ik ben absoluut geen aerodynamicus, maar wat ik wel weet is dat een sidepod in geen geval een groot dicht vertikaal vlak is met een aerodynamica van een baksteen.

      Die pods zijn allemaal al minimaal vorm gegeven, en op het breedste gedeelte zit een luchthapper waar de lucht niet tegenaan botst, maar waar die naar binnen gaat, ongetwijfeld om te koelen, als je die lucht vervolgens aan de binnenzijde van het bodywork kan sturen naar de plaats waar je hem hebben wil met zo weinig mogelijk drag, kan dat mischien wel net zo weinig drag opleveren als het concept van de benzen

      Dat zou absoluut kunnen. Sterker nog, als dit niet zo is waarom zou er dan nog een team niet de Merc-route op zijn gegaan? Vraag blijft dan wel; wat is het voordeel voor Mercedes geweest om wel voor hun variant te gaan?

    Als die 6 tienden is gevonden ben ik benieuwd hoeveel RB en Ferrari inmiddels hebben gevonden.

      Ik ben ook benieuwd. Achterstand inhalen is makkelijker dan uitlopen.
      Het hangt er vanaf in welke mate je al de potentie van de auto gebruikt.

      Normaal gesproken ben ik het met je eens, maar als je in het begin van een nieuw tijdperk bouwt op een slecht fundament kan je achterstand wel eens verder oplopen omdat de potentie van de updates er dan niet goed uitkomt. Mercedes spendeert nu ook kostbare tijd aan problemen die RB en Ferrari niet hebben.

    Begrijp het wel, nieuwe vloer 0,5 sec sneller motor op 80 ipv 70% 1 sec sneller. Met minimale inzet al 0,7 voor op Red Bull en Ferrari nog 2 sec over voor het geval dat en aan het eind van het seizoen roepen dat ze uit de dood zijn opgestaan.
