Schumacher ambitieus: "Niet vreemd om te zeggen dat we een podium kunnen pakken"

Het team van Haas rijdt vanmiddag met goede hoop de pitbox uit in Saoedi-Arabië. De Amerikaanse renstal lijkt weer helemaal terug na enkele dramatische jaren. In Bahrein waren de mannen van Günther Steiner de absolute smaakmakers en men scoorde dikke punten dankzij comeback kid Kevin Magnussen.

Magnussen kwam als vijfde over de streep in Bahrein en men aast in Jeddah op een volgend goed resultaat. Teamgenoot Mick Schumacher scoorde in Bahrein geen punten maar pakte wel het beste resultaat uit zijn loopbaan. De jonge Duitser kwam als elfde over de streep maar was daar niet echt tevreden mee, hij wil meer want er zit veel potentie in de nieuwe VF-22.

Ontevreden

De teleurstelling stemt Schumacher zelfs tevreden, hij is nog nooit zo blij geweest met een bittere teleurstelling. De sympathieke Haas-coureur spreekt zich uit tegenover Motorsport.com: "Het laat ons zien dat we ondanks ons beste resultaat ontevreden mogen zijn. We weten namelijk dat we veel meer in onze mars hebben. Het is dan ook heerlijk om teleurgesteld te zijn want we dromen van meer. Dat motiveert alleen maar meer om elke keer harder te werken."

Podium

Schumachers doel voor de Saoedische Grand Prix is dan ook duidelijk. De Duitse coureur wil niets liever dan punten pakken in de straten van Jeddah. Hij is er nogal duidelijk over: "Dit is de positie waarop wij azen. Wij willen zo dichtbij mogelijk zitten om de kruimels op te rapen. Het is niet vreemd om te zeggen dat wij dit jaar op het podium kunnen eindigen. We hebben nog 22 races op de kalender staan en veel weekenden kunnen chaotisch verlopen."

Magnussen zegt van niet, Schumacher van wel. Wat is het nou? :P

Overigens vind ik nog niet dat Schumacher potten heeft kunnen breken in de F1. Dan zal Magnussen eerder het podium pakken...

  Natuurlijk moet Schumacher eerst maar eens zijn eerste WK-punten gaan halen.
  
  Aan de andere kant schetst hij met een podiumplaats ook niet het onmogelijke, vooral als het Magnussen betreft (Mick zegt ook “we”).
  Vergeet ook niet (voor het gemak) zijn voorbehoud te lezen in zijn laatste zin: “… veel weekenden kunnen chaotisch verlopen.“
  
  Als een race op z’n kop gaat kan er van alles gebeuren, zelfs Stroll is op het podium beland…
  
  Vermoed ook dat Magnussen bedoelde dat Haas onder normale omstandigheden niet op het podium zal komen en dat zijn visie niet haaks op die van Schumacher staat.

  Vorig weekend zag er nou niet heel denderend uit voor Mick.
  Oke misschien had die wat schade, maar zou nooit heel veel zijn geweest gezien Ocon zijn tik perfect op het achterwiel was en niet op de vloer.
  
  Die P11 leverde exact het aantal punten op als de snelheid van Mick dat weekend... net niks.
  
  Misschien dit weekend beter, maar ik meende me te herinneren dat Schumacher hier vorig seizoen ook niet goed bezig was.

Het is wel vreemd om over een podium te praten als je nog nooit een punt heb gescoord, met alle respect. Als je kan vechten om de 4e plaats bij de constructeurs zou dat al ver boven verwachting zijn en fantastisch voor het team. Het geld ook als een solide basis in een nieuw tijdperk.

  Je hoeft maar een knotsgekke race te hebben en dan is het mogelijk.
  
  Belangrijkste voor Schumacher is deze race voor magnussen finishen.

  Met de betrouwbaarheid van tegenwoordig was afgelopen race al een knotsgekke race en toen werden ze 5e. Nog los van Schumacher die 12e eindigde. Maar met een Hongarije scenario zou het inderdaad kunnen. Magnussen verslaan en punten pakken kan er voor zorgen dat hij in de toekomst om podiums kan vechten. Dit is een belangrijk jaar voor hem.
