Hamilton roept op tot verandering in Saoedi-Arabië: "Belangrijk dat we ons bij laten praten"

Het Formule 1-circus is dit weekend voor de tweede keer in de geschiedenis neergestreken in Saoedi-Arabië. Op het pijlsnelle Jeddah Corniche Circuit gaat het echter niet alleen over racen. Het land van de race blijft namelijk nog steeds onderwerp van discussie, de mensenrechten in Saoedi-Arabië zijn immers niet bepaald fantastisch.

De Saoedische Grand Prix is een schoolvoorbeeld van het veelbesproken fenomeen sportswashing. Hiermee bedoelt men dat een discutabel regime een groot sportevenement gebruikt om hun imago voor de buitenwereld op te poetsen. Het is overduidelijk dat dit gebeurt in Saoedi-Arabië. Vrouwen mogen immers nog maar een paar jaar autorijden in het land en recent werden er nog massale executies uitgevoerd.

Beslissen

Zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton is één van de meest uitgesproken coureurs op het gebied van mensenrechten. Vorig jaar reed hij al met een regenbooghelm in Jeddah en ook nu laat de situatie hem niet onberoerd. Op een persmoment op de vrijdagochtend sprak hij zich uit. De Brit wordt geciteerd door Sky Sports: "Wij beslissen niet waar we heen gaan. Maar ik denk wel dat we de plicht hebben om te doen wat we kunnen."

Verandering

Hamilton maakt zich aardig wat zorgen over de situatie en hij zou dan ook graag verandering willen zien. De Mercedes-coureur roept leiders op: "Het is niet echt onze verantwoordelijkheid dat we hierheen komen maar we doen wat we kunnen. Het is belangrijk dat wij ons bij laten praten. Uiteindelijk is het de verantwoordelijkheid van diegene die aan de macht zijn, zij kunnen veranderingen maken maar we zien niets gebeuren. We moeten echt meer verandering zien."

Ik vind het nu niet echt een geweldig circuit en zou liever zien dat er een goed circuit voor terug komt, onder het mom mensenrechten het contract verscheuren zou ik zeggen.
