Russell staat achter Drive to Survive: "Zolang het een positieve impact heeft zie ik geen probleem"

Er is de afgelopen weken weer veel te doen over de Netflix-reeks 'Drive to Survive'. De achter-de-schermenshow van de Amerikaanse streamingsgigant neemt namelijk nogal een loopje met de werkelijkheid. Er wordt veel geknipt en geplakt waardoor er een misleidend beeld van de situaties ontstaat en coureurs onterecht in een kwaad daglicht worden gezet.

Regeren wereldkampioen Max Verstappen wilde al niet meewerken aan de reeks. De Nederlander hekelt de manier waarop Netflix rivaliteiten creëert en de manier waarop coureurs in beeld worden gebracht. Al snel kreeg zijn mening veel navolging en gaf Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali aan in gesprek te gaan met de streamingsgigant. Toch zijn er ook prominenten die volledig achter de reeks staan.

Belangrijk

Mercedes-coureur George Russell is één van de grote voorstanders van de serie. De talentvolle Brit sprak zich op vrijdag uit tegenover de internationale media: "Netflix is belangrijk voor iedereen in de Formule 1. We hebben gezien dat de sport groeit over de jaren en dat de serie nieuwe fans naar de sport heeft getrokken. Er is al veel gezegd over het dramatiseren van de serie maar uiteindelijk wil je de sport op zijn best laten zien. Zolang het een positieve impact heeft op de sport zie ik geen problemen."

Kroon

Russell kan eigenlijk wel lachen om de creatieve werkwijze van de makers van Drive to Survive. De Brit durft zelfs al een voorspelling te doen over hoe men hem volgend seizoen in beeld gaat brengen: "In de serie verdraaien ze misschien mijn woorden. Misschien lijkt het er dan op dat ik de kroon van Lewis wil afpakken ofzo."

In de positie bijvoorbeeld Yuki, wordt je weggezet als de nieuwe badguy van Tokio Drift... of Lando als een harteloze teamgenoot van een struggelende "zielige Ricciardo" met een keer zoveel jaar ervaring die echt rond reed als een loser de eerste helft.

Dat is een wereld van verschil om er wel of geen problemen mee te hebben.

  Ik snap Russell niet zo goed in deze , het is een hele goede coureur en staat op de deur te kloppen om bij de allerbesten te horen maar in deze gaat hij alweer Lewis zijn gat lopen te kussen terwijl hij dat echt niet nodig heeft.

  Zou Russell ook nog geen prominent willen noemen, hij rijdt wel bij een prominent team waar hij verbaal (voorlopig nog?) de rol van Toto’s ideale schoonzoon speelt.
  
  In potentie kan George wel een prominent worden als hij een reeks indrukwekkende prestaties neerzet.
  Wellicht durft hij dan ook wat vaker uit zijn rol te stappen en verbaal de echte Russell te laten zien.
  Er is hoop voor de toekomst…
