Aanslag en circuit in Jeddah in één beeld vastgelegd

De Saudische Grand Prix werd gisteren opgeschrikt door een Houthi-aanslag iets verderop in Jeddah. Na een bizar lange vergadering leken alle partijen het bijna eens, men wilde racen. Toch was er veel woede over, al helemaal als de wereld ziet hoe dichtbij de aanslag eigenlijk was.

Op een foto die circuleert op social media zijn de explosie en het circuit in één beeld gevangen.  Het zorgt wel voor een duidelijker beeld waarom men zolang twijfelde over het doorgaan van de race.

    Dit onderwerp gaat nog 15x uitgemolken worden, maar bij deze mijn 2 centen.

    Als een dergelijke aanval zo makkelijk op 12km plaats kan vinden, dan is de dreiging van een soortgelijke aanval op de zaterdag en zondag goed mogelijk. Die rebellen hebben met 1 raket nu wereldwijde publiciteit. En waarom zouden ze daar geen gebruik meer van maken om zichzelf op de kaart te zetten? Hoe kan de plaatselijke autoriteiten de mensen in Jeddah verzekeringen dat dit eenmalig was?

    Ja, dit zijn genoeg vraagtekens om wat mij betreft de stekker uit deze GP te trekken. Enige tijd geleden riep iedereen #nowar, maar onder de dreiging van een raketaanval rijden we gewoon door op zaterdag en zondag. Welke ruggengraat???

    Zelf kijk ik graag autosport, en zal vandaag en morgen ook de tv aan zetten. Hopelijk gebeurt er niets, maar in een onstabiele regio als dit, is alles te verwachten.

      Kan mij wel vinden in jouw mening. Daarnaast vind ik dat veiligheid altijd voorop moet staan. Op basis van wat jij schrijft en op basis van nul compromissen ten aanzien van veiligheid, was de keuze om de boel te cancellen wat mij betreft de juiste geweest.

      Maar het wordt moeilijk een ruggengraat te hebben in deze situatie als er gedreigd wordt met het niet kunnen vertrekken uit een land indien er niet geracet wordt.

      dan hadden ze het gisteren ook kunnen doen. Het circuit lijkt mij ontoegankelijk wat dat betreft. Een raket kun je afweren en drones kun je ook prima tegenhouden. Deze dreiging was er al die tijd al, zelfs toen de contracten getekend werden. Maar nu wordt ineens iedereen wakker? de vorige keer waren blijkbaar veels te druk met het WK gevecht en de afgelopen weken met de nieuwe auto's en de eerste race. Een aanslag op de F1 in SA is als Putin die navolanden gaat aanvallen met kernwapens. Is voorlopig helemaal niet aan de orde.
