'Formule 1-bazen en coureurs snel in gesprek over Jeddah-situatie'

De Saoedische Grand Prix hing afgelopen weekend enkele uren aan een zijden draadje. Op vrijdag werd er immers een aanslag gepleegd door Houthi-rebellen op een depot van Aramco, iets verderop in Jeddah. Op het moment van de aanslag waren de heren coureurs net bezig met de eerste vrije training.

Op de nacht van vrijdag op zaterdag werd er koortsachtig vergaderd door de teambazen, Formule 1-bazen en de coureurs. Formule 1-CEO Stefano Domenicali en FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem lieten al snel enthousiast weten dat de race gewoon door kon gaan. De coureurs waren niet overtuigd en men wilde de race afblazen. Na lang gesteggel gingen de coureurs toch overstag en het weekend ging 'gewoon' door.

Vergaderen

De coureurs wilden zich de volgende dagen niet teveel uitspreken over de overleggen maar het werd wel duidelijk dat de discussie nog niet ten einde was. De bizarre situatie in Jeddah heeft veel indruk gemaakt en men vermoedde dat er snel nog een vergaderrondje zou volgen tussen coureurs en de hoge heren van de sport.

Spoedig

Volgens Sky Sports komen coureurs en kopstukken spoedig bij elkaar om de situatie door te nemen. Het is dan ook nog maar zeer de vraag of men in de toekomst nog terugkeert in Saoedi-Arabië. Volgens de Britse zender heeft de organisatie van de sport de coureurs beloofd dat er nog voor de volgende race zal worden gesproken over de situatie. Details over locatie en tijdstip ontbreken echter nog.

Monaco vind ik toch echt wel iets anders dan Melbourne of Imola omdat het iets heel unieks heeft. Het geeft ongelofelijk mooie onboard beelden, en er is continu een grote kans op een crash en bijbehorende safety car.

Wat betreft sensatie... het zal nu wel even wennen worden. Bahrein en Jeddah zijn circuits waar je echt kan inhalen, en dan krijgen we nu Melbourne en Imola waar inhalen soms bijna onmogelijk is. Ik kan me dan ook weinig écht spannende races in Melbourne of Imola herinneren. Ik snap dan ook niet waarom veel mensen altijd vol lof zijn over deze circuits. Imola is denk ik als coureur wel heel gaaf om te rijden (met name de kwalificatie), maar je wil toch ook een echte race met inhaalacties zien?

Daarna komt trouwens Miami. Geen idee wat we daarvan kunnen verwachten.

  Kan me herinneren dat de laatste race in Melbourne wel spannend was, dat Ham. op Max aan het jagen was met nieuwe banden, maar dit jaar wordt het vast een 1,2 tje voor Ferrari, veel langzame bochten en tractie. Alvast gefeliciteerd Fer. Fanboys.

  Mee eens, Melbourne hoeft voor mij ook niet zo.
  Imola zou wat mij betreft weer de Tamburello mogen herstellen, die muren kunnen tegenwoordig veel veiliger worden gemaakt.
  Maar Singapore daarintegen wordt ik ook niet warm of koud van, terwijl daar ook het gevaar op de loer ligt.

  Mét Tamburello wordt het inderdaad al een heel ander circuit. Met het verwijderen van die bocht is eigenlijk de angel eruit gehaald. Begrijpelijk natuurlijk, maar inmiddels is de F1 echt veilig genoeg voor zo een bocht.
  
  Singapore vind ik overigens wel heel leuk. Maar dat is meer een stukje "gevoel" dan dat ik echt heel goed uit kan leggen waarom.

Dat coureurs een mening of angst kan hebben snap ik maar een F1 coureur is niet gekwalificeerd om ter plekke een risico inschatting te maken van de situatie. Dat is de taak van de organisatie en overheid.
Gebrek aan kennis kan al snel leidden tot een emotionele beslissing om te vertrekken terwijl als je er puur statistisch naar kijkt de kans vele malen groter is dat de coureurs gewond raken door een crash dan dat ze gewond raken door een in dit geval een drone aanval. Uiteindelijk is een aanslag nooit helemaal uit te sluiten, ook op Zandvoort niet.

Dat de F1 organisatie er voor kiest om in dit soort landen met een zekere geweld historie te gaan racen en dus ook bewust bepaalde risico's accepteren mogen ze eerst eens gaan bespreken en daarna uitleggen.

Volgens mij gaan ze ook nog praten over het feit dat het circuit, ondanks de kleine aanpassingen nog steeds levensgevaarlijk is. Daar was iedereen het over eens, maar het praten zal weinig nut hebben, want er ligt een zeer langdurig contract.

Snel in gesprek? Ik geloof er weinig van. De F1 teams hebben hier geen bal over te zeggen ... Beslissingen zijn volgens mij al lang genomen.

Ik verwacht ergens in de komende twee weken toch wel een statement van de teams en vooral de coureurs. Zo niet, dan weten we dat ze lijden aan selectieve verontwaardiging. Dan moeten ze nooit meer een statement maken tegen oorlogen of conflicten, en ook niet praten over mensenrechten en politiek. Dat zou lachwekkend zijn.
