Fitte Hulkenberg wanhoopt niet op nieuwe F1-comeback

Hoewel Nico Hulkenberg graag een terugkeer naar de Formule 1 zou willen na zijn twee invalbeurten is hij niet wanhopig op zoek om die terugkeer te maken. Met 181 races achter zijn naam is Hulkenberg een zeer ervaren Formule 1-coureur, hoewel hij sinds 2019 geen fulltime stoeltje in de koningsklasse heeft gehad.

Door de corona-pandemie zijn er in de loop der jaren echter verschillende kansen op zijn pad gekomen om terug te keren. In 2020 nam hij deel aan de 70th Anniversary Grand Prix op Silverstone en de Eifel Grand Prix voor Racing Point, terwijl hij ook werd opgeroepen door het team dat nu bekend staat als Aston Martin om de eerste twee races van 2022 in Bahrein en Saoedi-Arabië te rijden als de vervanger van Sebastian Vettel.

Hulkenberg dient als reserve- en ontwikkelingscoureur voor Aston Martin, maar zou hij nog een kans willen hebben om op de Formule 1-grid te staan? De Duitser zegt dat hij zeker weer instapt bij een team als hij gevraagd wordt maar het is niet iets waar hij wanhopig naar op zoek is. Tegen de BBC zei hij: "Natuurlijk mis ik het racen, dat is normaal maar ik ben niet wanhopig. Ik was er mentaal min of meer klaar mee, en het is duidelijk dat deze dingen nu vanwege corona zijn gebeurd: 2020 en ook dit jaar, en wie weet wat er in de toekomst kan gebeuren. Ik zie dat het best moeilijk en lastig is om een zitje te krijgen, maar als er een kans is, dan kunnen ze mij altijd bellen."

Fitter dan andere coureurs

Verschillende coureurs waren zichtbaar uitgeput na de Grand Prix van Saoedi-Arabië, terwijl Kevin Magnussen van Haas tijdens de kwalificatie over problemen met zijn nek sprak. Hulkenberg had fysiek geen moeite en legde uit dat hij in het verleden wel 'zwaardere' races heeft gereden.

De Hulk: "Misschien ben ik fitter dan verwacht of omdat het niet zo warm was, maar ik heb zwaardere races gehad, vooral in de hitte. Het ging beter dan ik had verwacht dus dat is goed. Ik ben ook erg trots op mijn race, die was netjes en foutloos. Ik heb alles gedaan wat ik kon met de auto die ik had."

Ik ben en blijf een Hulk-fan en ik denk dat teams als Alfa en Williams zijn kennis en ervaring goed kunnen gebruiken. Ook Aston Martin zouden zich, als ze eerlijk zijn, moeten bedenken of Stroll jr. wel de juiste coureur is om het team verder te helpen en of Nico dat niet beter kan samen met Vettel.
