Gasly: "In F1 is snelheid niet goed genoeg"

AlphaTauri-coureur Pierre Gasly erkent dat 'timing' cruciaal is om te slagen in de top van de Formule 1. Volgens de Fransman moet alles kloppen op en naast de baan.

"Je hebt alle politieke en financiële factoren nodig die op het juiste moment samen komen", zei hij op Canal + France.

“Ik kreeg de kans na mijn eerste volledige seizoen, toen ik veel jonger was dan ik nu ben", doelt Gasly op zijn promotie naar Red Bull Racing in 2019. "Toen zat ik nog ver van het huidige niveau en toch werd ik opgeroepen."

Het seizoen bij de Oostenrijkse hoofdmacht was geen succes en Gasly moest halverwege 2019 plaatsmaken voor Alexander Albon en werd teruggezet naar het B-team Scuderia Toro Rosso (hedendaags AlphaTauri).

De eenmalig GP-winnaar hoopt nog steeds op een tweede kans en blijft deze evangelie wereldwijd verkondigen. "Ik doe mijn werk nog steeds en ik denk dat als ik het niveau van de afgelopen jaren vasthoud, ik weer een uitnodiging krijg."

Gasly legt uit waarom hij nu wel klaar is voor de volgende stap. "De ervaring om deel uit te maken van de Formule 1-grid gaf me een duidelijk beeld van wat ik wil, wat ik nodig heb en wat ik van het team verwacht. Ik ben sterker geworden en dat geeft je ook vertrouwen."

“Ik heb nooit problemen gehad met snelheid. Maar in de F1 is het niet genoeg om snel te zijn, je moet ook weten hoe je het team kunt inspireren om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen naar hetzelfde doel toe werkt.

“Mijn manier van werken is de afgelopen jaren sterk geëvolueerd. Het is duidelijk dat ik dit seizoen geen kampioen zal worden. Maar over twee of drie jaar kan zo'n kans zich voordoen. Daarom is het voor mij belangrijk om constant mijn potentieel te laten zien."

De twijfel over Gasly’s houding ten opzichte van het team blijft bij mij.
Als hij aan bovenstaande quote had toegevoegd dat hij ook geleerd had om goed te luisteren was die twijfel een stuk weggenomen.

Niks zo wisselvallig en grillig als een carrière in de F1.
Gewoon gas blijven geven op niet teveel tenen trappen. Wie weet zien we Pierre dan weer in een topteam. De woorden van Marko geven te denken.
Zouden ze misschien weer zo’n AT-RBR switch voor Sergio achter de hand houden?
Dus contract verlenging voor Sergio met daarin de clausule dat hij evt geswitched kan worden met Pierre en in ruil een twee of drie jaar contract.

  Ik denk eerder dat er plaats wordt gemaakt voor een talent. Alles hangt eigenlijk af van Tsunoda. Als die nu een stap maakt, welke hij de laatste races van vorig seizoen ook maakte, dan zit hij op of tegen het niveau van Gasly. Dan gaat Marko een keuze maken tussen Tsunoda, Perez en Gasly. 1 van die 3 zal weg gaan en dan komt er een nieuw talent uit de opleiding. Is al jaren zo.
  Sfeer is alles en ik denk zo dat dit de grootste asset van Perez is. Gasly werd bepaald niet gewaardeerd binnen Red Bull. Wij weten niet in detail waarom, maar er is iets in het karakter van Gasly dat daar niet goed viel. Voorlopig denk ik dat Marko Gasly bij AT wil houden. Dat zal zeer waarschijnlijk Gasly niet accepteren, begreep wel uit een interview dat Gasly na dit jaar nog een jaar had en Gasly zal vertrekken en zwalken. Net als Ricciardo nu. De top teams zijn al lang bezet. En daarbij zie ik hem Russel ook niet verslaan mocht hij in het zitje van Hamilton terecht komt.

In de alinea daarboven zegt Pierre dat hij het team moet inspireren om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen naar hetzelfde doel toe werkt.
Dat interpreteer ik - mede door zijn eerdere gedrag - dat hij nog steeds denkt dat hij het team zijn wil op moet leggen (beetje gechargeerd), in plaats van te beseffen dat hij een radartje in het systeem is, dat samen met het team doelen nastreeft.

Nogmaals, het is slechts mijn interpretatie, die ik vanaf een flinke afstand maak en ik hoop voor Gasly dat ik er naast zit..

  Hiermee wil hij eigenlijk zeggen dat het niet zijn schuld was.

  Het zou best uniek zijn als hij terug komt in een topteam. Ik ken weinig coureurs die vanuit een topteam weg moesten en later toch weer terug kwamen. Magnussen, Kovailinen, Albon, Kvyatt eigenlijk alleen Perez is het gelukt ( met een beetje mazzel)

  Ik ben het volledig met je eens. Uitgaande van de woorden zoals die in dit artikel ge-quote zijn komt het op me over dat hij juist nog steeds er niets van snapt. Daarnaast als ik kijk naar Gasly de laatste jaren in de AT, Bottas nu in de Alfa en vermoedelijk ook Albon in de Williams dit seizoen, dan wordt maar weer eens duidelijk hoe beestachtig snel coureurs als Max en Lewis zijn. Er is geen enkele rede om aan rte nemen dat Gasly nu wel met die druk om kan gaan.

Hij kan beter zijn prestaties laten spreken dan zijn franse mond.

Gasly die komt niet meer naast Max te rijden, volgens mij zit hij prima op zijn plek, al denkt Gasly er totaal anders over.
