Vier DRS-zones tijdens Australische Grand Prix

Dit weekend rijden de heren coureurs voor het eerst sinds 2019 weer in Australië. Men zal te maken krijgen met een aardig aangepaste baan in Melbourne. Het circuit van Albert Park heeft een redelijke metamorfose ondergaan en het is de bedoeling dat men nu beter kan inhalen. De Formule 1 doet er in ieder geval alles aan om dat te verwezenlijken.

De coureurs kunnen zich namelijk gaan voorbereiden op een enorm tactische steekspel. Uit een vrijgegeven circuit-map blijkt namelijk dat er dit weekend maar liefst vier DRS-zones zijn. Opvallend genoeg zijn er voor die vier zones maar twee DRS-detectiezones. Dat betekent dat de DRS-zones elkaar op rap tempo opvolgen en de coureurs veel kunnen gaan duelleren.

Zones

De eerste DRS-zone ligt op het start\finish-stuk. De tweede zone volgt al zeer snel want de coureurs kunnen hun vleugel daarna open klappen tussen bocht 2 en 3. Het detectiepunt voor deze twee eerste DRS-zones ligt vlak voor bocht 13. Het tweede detectiepunt ligt tussen bocht 6 en 7. Daarna volgt de derde DRS-zone tussen bocht 8 en bocht 9. Snel daarna volgt de laatste DRS-zone, tussen bocht 10 en 11.

Tactiek

Men kan zich voorbereiden op een tactisch spel wat men eerder zag bij de Saoedische Grand Prix. Daar probeerden coureurs elkaar uit te remmen om maar niet vooraan te rijden bij de snel op elkaar volgende DRS-zones. Het circuit in Albert Park is echter compleet verschillend in vergelijking met de Saoedische omloop.

Melbourne is na Monaco het slechtste circuit waar je kan halen inhalen. Ze moeten dus wel iets proberen ondanks de nieuw auto’s. Hopelijk is dit geen voorbode voor andere circuits. De bedoeling moet zijn dat DRS in toekomst overbodig wordt.

  Ik weet wat nieuws voor albert park: helemaal niet meer terug komen. Het circuit is misbaar als kiespijn.

Het grootste probleem op de baan is de hoge snelheidschicane achterop het circuit. Volgens mij is dat bocht 11 & 12. Inhalen voor die bocht was altijd onmogelijk, met de veranderingen aan het circuit nu waarschijnlijk nagenoeg onmogelijk. Had die chicane er ook uitgehaald, had er een vloeiende bocht van gemaakt en dan had men echt kunnen slipstreamen tot aan de huidige bocht 13. Wellicht had je dan zelfs die 3e drs zone niet nodig gehad en enkel het stukje drs in zone 4.

Het begint een beetje op de Indycars te lijken zo... de hele race continue positiewisselingen hetzij dat die in de F1 erg kunstmatig zijn. Hoef je alleen de laatste ronde te kijken, want alles wat daarvoor gebeurd heeft niks met tactiek of een raceplan te maken (en als het wel zo is, dan is het niet te volgen).

Racen is toch zo snel mogelijk je rondjes rijden? Nu is het naast banden sparen, benzineverbruik managen ook nog eens zorgen dat je voor de laatste DRS zone van de race op P2 rijd... Ik mis de goede oude tijd... Krijg zelfs heimwee naar de tijd dat Schumacher in zijn Ferrari bijna iedereen iedere race op een of meerdere ronde reed. Toen wist je tenminste dat ze het uiterste uit de auto's en coureurs haalden.

Dat betekent dus dat Verstappen en LeClerc elkaar om precies te zijn 476.821 x gaan inhalen.
