Vettel terug na coronabesmetting: "Alsof ik te laat op school kom"

Dit weekend maakt Sebastian Vettel weer zijn comeback achter het stuur. De Duitse Aston Martin-coureur miste de eerste twee races van het seizoen door een positieve coronatest. Nu is de viervoudig wereldkampioen echter weer terug, de goedlachse coureur zal zijn draai weer moeten vinden in de tegenvallende Aston Martin.

Vettels vervanger Nico Hülkenberg en zijn teamgenoot Lance Stroll konden in Bahrein en Saoedi-Arabië geen potten breken met de groene bolide. De twee coureurs worstelden met hun vorm en de wagen, alle ogen zijn nu gericht op de teruggekeerde Vettel. De Duitser is de stercoureur van het team en men hoopt dan ook op een opleving in Melbourne.

School

Vettel zelf wil nog niet te hard van de toren blazen. De Duitse coureur moet weer zijn draai vinden na een maand zonder rijtijd. In een persbericht van zijn team spreekt hij zich uit: "Nadat ik twee races moest missen door mijn positieve test voelt het nu een beetje alsof ik te laat kom op school. Ik heb er in ieder geval weer heel erg veel zin in! Ik heb mij seizoen al veel vaker gestart in Australië en het is fantastisch dat we hier weer terug zijn na een paar lastige jaren."

Ritme

De viervoudig wereldkampioen verwacht echter niet zoveel van zijn comeback. Hij moet zijn ritme weer helemaal terugvinden in Melbourne: "Na een maand zonder racen moet ik tijdens de trainingen weer heel erg veel gaan leren. Ik hoop dat we weer wat stapjes in de goede richting kunnen zetten in een race die normaliter nogal spannend en onvoorspelbaar is."

Mooi dat die terug is. Stiekem hoop ik op een 10e plek in de race. Dan is gelijk de stress van puntloos zijn eraf.

  Zeker voor mensen die grote fysieke inspanningen leveren blijkt het toch nog een heel gevaarlijk virus, dus dat ze nog met mondkapjes (neem aan dat je die bedoelt) rondlopen in de paddock vind ik te begrijpen. Een race missen door ziekte kan je ook zomaar het kampioenschap kosten, dus voorzichtigheid is ook in dat opzicht volledig te begrijpen.
