Russell merkt vreemde dingen op met zachte C5-band

Mercedes kende een teleurstellende vrijdag in Australië en kwam net als de eerste twee races van het seizoen niet goed uit de verf. In Albert Park hadden zowel Lewis Hamilton als George Russell moeite met de auto en waren er niet de resultaten waarop men gehoopt had.

Russell ziet ook veel werk in het verschiet voor het team, hoewel hij vreemde dingen opmerkte met de zachte C5-band, waarvan hij zei dat die eigenlijk beter naarmate er meer ronden mee gereden waren. Over de snelheid die Mercedes moet vinden, zei Russell: "Het is duidelijk dat we veel tekort komen. We bevinden ons niet in de positie waar we willen zijn, er zijn nogal wat middenveldauto's voor ons en het is duidelijk een behoorlijke achterstand naar de top van het veld."

"We moeten vanavond hard werken. De auto voelde goed, zeker niet slecht, maar we moeten de beperkingen begrijpen. Ik vond het vreemd om te rijden met de zachte band, want ik bleef continu mijn rondetijd verbeteren, iedere ronde ging ik sneller. Ik weet dat een paar andere coureurs dat ook deden, maar het leek een beetje extravaganter van onze kant."

Nog nooit zoveel last van porpoising

Russell heeft regelmatig gesproken over porpoising met de W13 en legde uit dat tijdens de vrijdagtraining het stuiteren dit seizoen waarschijnlijk het ergst was. Dat gezegd hebbende gelooft Mercedes in dit stadium nog steeds dat dit de snelste manier is om ronden te rijden, wat werd bewezen door het feit dat Ferrari duidelijk flink veel last had van het stuiteren op de rechte stukken, maar beide sessies de snelste tijd reed.

"We zijn absoluut behoorlijk slecht qua stuiteren in bocht 9, het is waarschijnlijk de zwaarste die ik heb meegemaakt, maar ik denk dat het iets is waar we voorlopig mee te maken hebben. Wij geloven dat dit de snelste manier is om over het circuit te rijden, maar misschien is dat niet zo. We moeten proberen de zaken op een rijtje te krijgen en te begrijpen wat er is gebeurd", zei Russell.

Ferrari stuiterde hier ook al veel meer dan in Bahrein en Saoedi Arabië. Dat je daarmee alsnog de snelste tijd over één rond rijdt kan ik me nog wel voorstellen, maar over een hele race is dat voor de coureur toch niet vol te houden lijkt me.

  dat zal wel een dingetje worden morgenochtend het lijkt dat Ferrari redelijk op de grens zit met de setup terwijl er bij Red Bull nog wat ruimte lijkt .

  Ik zie de Ferrari's op zaterdag de pole nog wel halen ondanks (of dankzij?) het gestuiter, maar een gehele race afstand zie ik fysiek (en mentaal qua concentratie) niet gebeuren. Misschien zelfs dat de auto's voordien nog uit elkaar vallen door het gestuiter.
  En wie staat er dan weer klaar in zijn Oracle RedBullRacing bolide om de winst te pakken...?

  Ik denk dat Ferrari het wel op orde krijgt, in ieder geval tot op zekere hoogte. in Saoedi Arabië werd er soms ook flink gestuiterd in de trainingen, vooral Sainz in VT2 was toen extreem. Maar in de race hadden ze het goed onder controle. Volgens mij weten ze bij Ferrari hoe ze er met hun auto mee moeten gaan. Dat in tegenstelling tot Mercedes.

  Fer stuiterde de overige races ook en hebben de race goed uitgereden. Fer heeft ook wat dat betreft, werk aan de winkel.
  Zelfs een rbr die als een baksteen ligt kan een dnf oplopen.
