Vettel likt zijn wonden: "Kan niet slechter dan dit"

Het team van Aston Martin kende een werkelijk rampzalig weekend in Australië. Coureurs Lance Stroll en Sebastian Vettel waren meermaals betrokken bij crashes en incidenten. Vettel kreeg ook nog eens te maken met mechanische problemen en de teruggekeerde Duitser viel tevens uit in de race na een knullige crash.

Vettel keerde dit weekend terug nadat hij de eerste twee races had gemist door een coronabesmetting. In de eerste vrije training moest hij al vroeg zijn bolide naast de baan parkeren waarna zijn Power Unit werd vervangen. De problemen uit de eerste training zorgden ervoor dat hij de tweede training moest overslaan. De derde training verliep ook waardeloos aangezien Vettel crashte. Hij kwalificeerde zich daarna diep in het achterveld.

Te hard

In de race ging het gisteren niet veel beter voor de viervoudig wereldkampioen. Hij ging in de 23ste ronde de fout in en klapte in de muur. De safety car kwam de baan op en Vettel kon gaan douchen. Tegenover Motorsport.com geeft hij tekst en uitleg: "Ik probeerde alles uit de auto te halen. Achteraf gezien heb ik misschien iets te hard gepusht. Ik zag geen meer om hem op te vangen toen ik de wagen kwijtraakte."

Beter

Het was voor Vettel zeer belangrijk om veel meters te maken in Australië. De Duitser had immers weinig tijd in de cockpit doorgebracht in de testweek. In Australië kende hij echter in elke sessie zeer grote problemen. Vettel ziet wel een positieve kant aan alle pech: "Alles werd alleen maar lastiger omdat we door alle incidenten dit weekend maar weinig konden rijden. Ik ben er van overtuigd dat alles alleen maar beter wordt, het kan in ieder geval niet slechter."

Ik kan me geen slechter weekend bedenken voor een F1-team sinds BAR in België 99 toen twee wagens compleet werden vernietigd bij Eau Rouge. Nu ik er over nadenk... BAR 99 en Aston Martin hebben misschien meer gemeen dan dat.

  Kan me nog herinneren dat heel veel mensen medelijden had met Checo. Dat was voordat hij een contract tekende bij Red Bull.

  En dan na te gaan dat als Vettel niet bij AM had getekend, hij nu misschien wel in de RBR had gezeten. Hij was volgens alles de grootste kanshebber voor het stoeltje naast Verstappen, maar was geen optie meer omdat hij al bij AM had getekend.

  Rogier: Hmm, lichamelijk zal hij wel fit genoeg zijn.. maar wat ik wèl zie is dat Vettel t rijden niet meer boven àlles stelt. Het lijkt bijzaak. De auto is ook een lachtertje tot nu toe.. The whole package is niet echt motiverend voor n viervoudig WK en hij lijkt klimaat en politiek steeds belangrijker te vinden om t uit te dragen.
  Mss zelfs zo erg dat ik er niet van sta te kijken dat hij geen onderdeel meer wil zijn van een circus dat tig vluchten per jaar op zn rekening neemt en alles wat daar langs nog bij komt. Hij ontgroeit de F1 misschien. De langere haren en de ongeschoren kin rijmen wat dat betreft ook met een beeld van een natuurmens cq hippie-aqchtige. :-)
  Ja Vettel vindt t wel welletjes na 2022 denk ik.

  Vettel zou meer in de flower power tijd op zn plaats zijn geweest idd. Toen liepen de mensen ook onverzorgd rond met een heel oerwoud op hun kop, zingen over een betere wereld, beetje lsd gebruiken, want daar verdenk ik Seb ook van

  Als ik Vettel zo zie dan zou het mij niks verbazen als hij nog gedurende het seizoen zijn helm aan de wilgen hangt en De Hulk weer zijn helm van de kapstok kan pakken. Helemaal als die Aston Martin niet rap eens wat beter wordt zodat hij punten kan scoren

Hij heeft veel te weinig getoond de laatste jaren.
OK, de Aston is geen topwagen maar het verschil met Stroll was nu ook niet zo groot.

Seb heeft tijdens zijn Ferrari periode overwegend mooie herinneringen nagelaten, maar sinds eind 2018 is het eigenlijk alleen maar bergafwaarts gegaan. Jammer want het lijkt me een heel goed mens, maar de beste racejaren liggen achter hem.

Kan me niet ontdoen van de gedachte dat het allemaal teveel een opdracht is geworden ipv een overduidelijke bewuste keuze om in F1 te blijven. Zou een leuke piloot zijn voor een DTM of endurance...
