Stewards roepen op tot verandering na bijna crash Schumacher

Mick Schumacher ontsnapte gisteren aan een nieuwe monstercrash. De Duitse Haas-coureur schrok zich tijdens de tweede safety car-fase een hoedje toen hij ineens Yuki Tsunoda voor hem zag afremmen. Schumacher reed veel sneller en kon nog net op tijd naar links sturen om de Japanse AlphaTauri-coureur te ontwijken.

Het was een angstaanjagend moment en vanzelfsprekend keken de stewards ernaar. Schumacher en Tsunoda moesten zich melden en ook Pierre Gasly moest langskomen. De Fransman reed namelijk voor het duo en zou vaart hebben geminderd waarop Tsunoda hetzelfde deed. Schumacher zag dit dus over het hoofd waardoor hij bijna een horrorcrash beleefde.

Gat

De stewards deelden echter geen straf uit omdat ze niet vinden dat de coureurs de regels overtraden. In het sportief reglement staat dat de coureurs achter de safety car niet onnodig langzaam, niet onregelmatig en niet op een gevaarlijke manier mogen rijden. Daarnaast moeten de heren coureurs zich tijdens een safety car-situatie ook houden aan een bepaalde afstand. Ze mogen namelijk geen gat laten vallen van meer dan tien wagenlengtes.

Realiteit

De stewards willen dat de sport gaat kijken naar het afstandspunt. In hun motivatie voor het niet uitdelen van een straf roepen ze de wedstrijdleiding hier tot op. De coureurs proberen tijdens een safety car-periode immers hun banden op temperatuur te houden door te slalommen of af te remmen en dan weer te accelereren. Volgens de stewards is de regel van tien autolengtes lastig te rijmen met de realiteit waarin de coureurs hun banden opwarmen.

De safety car moet simpelweg een oude, beperkte f1-bolide in een egale kleur met knipperlichten worden; eentje die het tempo er redelijk in kan houden. Geen opgevoerde perssonsauto, maar een afgestemde open-wheel bolide.

  En dan verlies je downforce achter de safetycar en knal je erop. Of zie je niets meer door de mega spray aan regen die van die banden af komt. Nee, ik denk dat de safetycar een GT auto moet zijn. Dichte cockpit, ruitenwissers, koplampen, 2 mensen in de auto. Plek voor een brandblussertje. Lijkt me toch wat safer.
