Pirelli verrast door strategie Albon: "Opmerkelijke aanpak"

Alexander Albon pakte afgelopen weekend in Australië zijn eerste punt van het huidige seizoen. De Thaise Brit van Williams deed dat op zeer spectaculaire wijze, hij startte de race vanaf de laatste plaats nadat hij uit de kwalificatie-uitslag was geschrapt omdat hij te weinig brandstof in zijn Williams had zitten.

Albon begon de wedstrijd dus vanaf de allerlaatste startplek en zijn team Williams had een slimme strategie bedacht. De Thai startte de race op de harde band en hij bleef lange tijd buiten. Terwijl zijn collega's de pitstraat opzochten om van banden te wisselen deed Albon alsof zijn neus bloedde. In de allerlaatste ronde kwam hij alsnog naar binnen en reed hij naar de tiende plaats.

Bandenwarmers

Bij bandenleverancier Pirelli vielen ze haast van hun stoel van verbazing. Topman Mario Isola spreekt zich uit tegenover Motorsport.com: "Williams was in staat om de banden optimaal te benutten en dat deden ze met een goede snelheid. Dit is echt belangrijke informatie. Met de lagere temperaturen van de bandenwarmers en de nieuwe compounds is de opwarming van de banden een potentieel probleem. De eerste rondjes naar een safety car zijn lastig omdat je de band op een juiste manier moet opwarmen. Het is echt heel opmerkelijk. Ik krab mijzelf achter de oren van hoe dit mogelijk is."

Opmerkelijk

Isola kan zich niet heugen dat een team een dergelijke strategie toepaste tijdens een race. De Italiaanse topman is dan ook nog steeds met complete stomheid geslagen: "Dit is de eerste keer in twaalf jaar dat ik zo'n situatie meemaak. Een situatie waarbij een auto vanaf de start de gehele race op dezelfde banden rijdt. Het is echt een opmerkelijke aanpak."

Albon heeft een toprace gereden. In de punten. En dat na een dramatische kwalificatie.
Was wel grappig, hij duwde met een aantal stewards zijn auto na stilvallen voor bocht 13 pal onder onze neus. Heb naar hem geroepen toen. “Go get some points on Sunday!” Hij keek omhoog maar heeft het denk ik niet gehoord met de helm op.

Ik had nóg een rondje gewacht.
Dan had Albon een ronde minder hoeven rijden (omdat de winnaar ondertussen tijdens zijn stop over de finish was gekomen) én had hij na de pitstop slechts de halve pitstraat hoeven af te leggen tot de hoogte van de finishlijn om zelf te finishen.
Dat had hem zelfs een plaats hoger opgeleverd omdat hij deze nu heeft weggegeven vanwege de verloren tijd tijdens zijn eigen stop.

  Aanvulling;
  Eigenlijk dezelfde manier waarop Michael Schumacher ooit de winst heeft gepakt toen hij een stop&go moest doen en hij deze pas in de laatste ronde inlostte.
  Maar... volgens mij hebben ze daarop de regels aangepast dus ik weet niet of dat nu ook met pitstops is toegestaan.

  Dat had niet gewerkt, want tot en met plek 12 zaten nog in dezelfde rond als Leclerc.

  Om te finishen moet je de controlelijn op de baan overschreiden.
  Alles voorbij de controlelijn in de pitlane behoort tot de pit exit.

Had hij nog 1 punt voor de snelste ronde kunnen pakken.

  Hij reed op de voor Magnussen en Schumacher en zou die plaatsen verliezen met een pitstop (maar hij moest naar binnen om aan het regelement te voldoen. Echter toen Albon in de pits was werden de Haasen ingehaald door Leclerc waardoor ze werden afgevlagt. Mazzeltje voor Albon

Heb ik nou goed gezien dat Albon de pitstraat in ging net voordat Leclerc de race finishte? Dat is dan geniaal want daarmee maakte hij zijn pitstop terwijl de race werd afgevlagd, maar Albon kon hierna nog wel een volledige ronde rijden.
