Hamilton toont zich strijdbaar: "Ik wil optimistisch blijven"

Zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton wilde dit seizoen weer een gooi doen naar zijn recordbrekende achtste wereldtitel. Zijn dromen konden echter al vrij snel de koelkast in toen de nieuwe Mercedes niet zo'n superwagen bleek als zijn voorgangers. De prestaties vallen tegen maar dat betekent niet dat men geen vertrouwen meer heeft.

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes had gehoopt op een sterkere start van het nieuwe seizoen. De realiteit is echter dat de teams van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing momenteel veel sneller zijn en dat coureurs Hamilton en George Russell worstelen met de kinderziektes van de wagen. Hamilton heeft het vooral zeer lastig, in Saoedi-Arabië kwam hij niet eens door Q1 heen.

Optimistisch

Desondanks de vele problemen en de achterstand blijft Hamilton toch een positief mens. De Britse coureur hoopt op een snelle verbetering. Hamilton wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Ik wil graag optimistisch blijven. Er zijn nog steeds twintig races te gaan. Als je realistisch naar onze sport kijkt, dan weet je dat de topteams zich op gelijke wijze ontwikkelingen. Of dat weer het geval is met de nieuwe auto's? Dat weten we niet maar ik hoop dat we uiteindelijk mee kunnen vechten."

Realistisch

De ervaren Hamilton weet echter heus wel dat de concurrentie niet wacht tot Mercedes het licht weer heeft gezien. Naast een optimistische blik heeft de Brit namelijk ook een realistische blik: "Maar elke keer als wij ons verbeteren zullen Ferrari en Red Bull ook stappen zetten. Dus dat gaat niet echt makkelijk worden. Het gat is inderdaad groot maar we hebben momenteel nog een lange weg te gaan."

Ze hebben 'n knaller van 'n auto, maar ze draaien de boel nog niet open.

Over twee races staan ze er in één keer bij, wacht maar eens af.......mss.
