Mercedes geeft verklaring voor koelingsproblemen Hamilton: "We pushen alles tot de limiet"

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes kende een lastige seizoensstart maar afgelopen weekend ging het een stukje beter. De Duitse renstal zag hun coureurs George Russell en Lewis Hamilton als derde en vierde over de finishlijn komen. De Britten kwamen wel op grote afstand van racewinnaar Charles Leclerc over de streep maar het was alsnog een aardig resultaat.

Hamilton kende had in Australië alsnog last van enkele ongemakken. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen was achter zijn jonge teamgenoot over de streep maar onderweg had hij problemen. In de slotfase van de race kwam hij met een opvallende boodschap op de boordradio. Hij riep tegen zijn team dat ze hem in een moeilijke positie hadden gebracht.

Pushen

Hamiltons boodschap ging over oververhittingverschijnselen aan zijn wagen. Strategisch Mercedes-kopstuk James Vowles geeft uitleg over de situatie. Hij wordt geciteerd door Motorsport.com: "Het ging volledig over de motorkoeling en de het koel houden van de Power Unit tijdens de race. Je kan je voorstellen dat we alles pushen tot de limiet. Dat geldt dus ook voor de koeling. Je doet dit door aan de achterzijde het bodywork dicht te maken of het ontwerp van de lamellen aan te passen."

Warmer

Maar de tactiek van Mercedes legde niet bepaald windeieren. Bij Hamilton werd het allemaal net iets te heet onder de voeten. Vowles legt het uit: 'In dit specifieke geval was de temperatuur één of twee graden warmer dan wij van te voren hadden verwacht. Hierdoor zaten wij exact op de limiet wat van de motor en PU aankomen als je het over de koeling hebt."

  Tja beter afgeknepen en 2e staan bij de constructeurs en Russell staat 2e in het wk, dan bidden dat je de finish vlag haalt maar wel de hoogste topsnelheid heb.

  Mogelijk hebben ze gedacht het verlies aan vermogen te compenseren door aero. Heeft Ferrari ook wel eens gepoogd (toen niet gelukt).
