Alpine tevreden met nieuwe krachtbron: "Binnen 10 pk van de snelste motor"

Het team van Alpine wil niets liever dan de sprong maken naar de kop van het veld. De Franse renstal barst van de ambitie en wil zo snel mogelijk toeslaan. Tot nu toe gaat dat redelijk maar de enorme successen blijven vooralsnog uit, toch gaat men er zelf vanuit dat het gat aardig is geslonken.

Het team van Alpine is eigenlijk nog steeds het fabrieksteam van Renault. De Franse krachtbron is echter nooit de snelste van het stel geweest. De motoren van Honda en Mercedes hadden altijd veel meer in zich. De motoren-afdeling in het Franse Viry is echter niet bij de pakken neer gaan zitten. Afgelopen winter heeft men zo hard mogelijk doorgewerkt.

Het lijkt zijn vruchten af te werpen want coureurs Fernando Alonso en Esteban Ocon hebben de snelheid aardig te pakken. In Australië was Alonso zelfs op weg naar een mogelijke pole position totdat hij crashte. Teambaas Otmar Szafnauer is in ieder geval positief tegenover Motorsport.com: "Ik denk dat wij een stap hebben gezet met de Power Unit. We bevinden ons nu vermoedelijk binnen 10 pk van de beste motor en we staan ergens in het midden. Ik denk dat ze in Viry perfect werk hebben geleverd. Nu is het aan ons om de auto te blijven ontwikkelen."

Verbeteringen

De motorontwikkelingen zijn bevroren maar dat betekent niet dat men geen ontwikkelingen mag doorvoeren. Als het nodig is mag men immers nog wel het een en ander aanpassen. Szafnauer is in ieder geval zeer tevreden: "Het stelt ons in staat om beter samen te werken met onze motorische jongens zodat we verbeteringen kunnen doorvoeren. Dat doen we door de architectuur van het chassis aan te passen. Sommige dingen zijn voor ons nog vrij maar we moeten ons ook focussen op het verbeteren van het chassis voor de toekomst."

We hebben ook de laatste "goodies" nog niet gezien bij iedereen.
Ferrari gaf al aan niet alle knopjes te hebben opengedraaid.
Feit is dat Alpine/Renault een enorme stap hebben gemaakt.

Binnen 10 pk van de snelste motor.
Dus binnen 10 pk van Ferrari.
Daarmee zijn ze dus Mercedes voorbij want Toto riep van de week dat Ferrari van 17 pk tekort naar 17 pk meer is gegaan.
Dan loopt Mercedes nu 7 pk achter op Alpine?
Het zijn natuurlijk marginale verschillen maar op een pole rondje met de nummer 2 op 0,034 seconde achterstand kan dat natuurlijk het verschil maken.
Hoe dan ook hebben ze bij Renault eindelijk het licht gezien, afscheid genomen van het clownsduo Alain en Cyril en met Otmar een teambaas die ze verder kan helpen. Nog even en ik word zowaar een fan ze.
Aan de rijders ligt het niet. Die hebben beide zware jaren achter de kiezen maar het heeft ze wel een stuk leuker en sympathieker gemaakt en ik heb ook wel het idee dat ze elkaar sneller maken en opjagen.
