Mercedes verklaart bijzonder Australisch radiobericht Russell

Het team van Mercedes is niet bepaald op de gewenste manier aan het nieuwe seizoen begonnen. De regerend constructeurskampioen kan de Ferrari's en de Red Bulls nog niet bijhouden en daarnaast kampen de bolides ook nog eens met de nodige kinderziektes. De meest recente Grand Prix stemt in ieder geval wel hoopvol.

Tijdens de Australische Grand Prix reden coureurs George Russell en Lewis Hamilton immers een aardige race. Russell kwam uiteindelijk als derde over de streep en dat was een fikse opsteker. Aankomend weekend wil men vanzelfsprekend dit goede resultaat een vervolg geven in Imola. Maar bij Mercedes hoopt men dat één euvel uit Australië dan geen rol meer speelt.

Instorten

In Australië kreeg Russell namelijk te horen dat hij in een duel met Sergio Perez niet te hard moest verdedigen. Het was een opvallend bericht maar volgens Mercedes-kopstuk James Vowles was het onderdeel van de strategie. In de debrief op YouTube legt Vowles het uit: "Het is niet zo dat we George hebben gevraagd om Perez er langs te laten, we willen nooit een positie opgeven. Maar de compounds vroegen om veel bandenmanagement. We moesten erop letten dat we het einde van de race konden halen zonder dat de banden compleet instorten. We zagen dat in de eerste stint namelijk bij Perez."

Opletten

Bij Mercedes staat men nog steeds achter de keuze van het opvallende radiobericht. Volgens Vowles zat er namelijk niets anders op en kon een stevig duel met Perez roet in het eten gooien. Het strategisch kopstuk is dan ook helder in zijn uitleg: "Het bericht richting George was dus ook heel simpel: let op je banden! We willen natuurlijk niet dat het ons een plaats kost op Perez maar het was het beste wat we konden doen."

Als het zover is dat bij verdediging de banden te hard slijten is dit de juiste beslissing, je moet ook in dit stadium naar de punten kijken, en die hebben ze vooralsnog hard nodig bij Mercedes.

  En dat maakt het juist geen bijzonder bericht. Alsof dit de eerste keer in de F1 historie is dat ze vanwege bandenmanagement iemand voor laten gaan.

  Maar dat is wel iets waar we vanaf moeten. De auto's moeten in staat zijn om heel de race te kunnen vechten. Het gaat nu veel te veel om banden en benzine sparen.

  @patrick als ze dat doen rekenen de strategie jongens een andere rondetijd uit 🤣 en blijf je het zelfde houden.
  
  Ze moeten gewoon een minimale delta tijd geven die ze elke ronde moeten halen afgestemd op de kwalificatie ronde met een minimaal brandstof verbruik.
  
  Regels zo schrijven dat ze moeten pushen.
  Krijg je ook meer pitstops en dus meer variaties op strategieën.
