Hamilton geeft Chelsea-interesse toe: "Ben een sportfan"

Gisteren kwam zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton op opvallende wijze in het nieuws. De Brit zou namelijk onderdeel zijn van een groep investeerders die de voetbalclub Chelsea wil kopen. De club uit Londen staat te koop omdat de Russische ex-eigenaar zijn speeltje van de hand moest doen door de oorlog in Oekraïne.

Het nieuws van Hamiltons interesse was opvallend aangezien hij bekend staat als een fan van Arsenal. Daarnaast is de Brit niet de enige opvallende naam van de groep investeerders, ook tennisster Serena Williams stak er geld in. Overigens zijn er nog meer geïnteresseerden in de club en was het simpelweg een gerucht.

Voetbalfan

Hamilton liet tijdens de persconferentie op vrijdagochtend echter weten dat hij daadwerkelijk geïnteresseerd is in de koop van Chelsea. Tegenover de internationale media liet hij weten wat de reden achter zijn interesse is: "Ik ben al een voetbalfan sinds ik een kind ben. Ik heb gevoetbald tot ik een jaar of 17 was. Elk jaar speelde ik in het team van de school, dat deed ik tijdens mijn gehele jeugd. Ik ben daarnaast ook naar veel verschillende wedstrijden geweest."

Arsenal

De Brit stond bekend als een Arsenal-fan maar die liefde lijkt nu bekoeld. Hamilton geeft aan dat zijn oom wél een Chelsea-fan is en dat zijn zus verantwoordelijk is voor zijn clubvoorkeur: "Ik weet nog dat ik als kind de clubs afwisselden. Ik kwam thuis en mijn zus kneep mij in de arm en zei dat ik Arsenal-fan moest worden. Dus toen ik vijf of zes was werd ik fan van Arsenal."

Sportfan

De Mercedes-coureur werd benaderd door het kopstuk van de investeerders, Martin Broughton. Daarna gaf hij zijn ja-woord en volgens Hamilton maakt de clubvoorkeur niets uit: "Uiteindelijk ben ik een sportfan. Dit is de grootste sport in de wereld en Chelsea is één van de grootste clubs ter wereld. Toen ik lucht kreeg van deze kans dacht ik, dit is de kans om onderdeel te zijn van iets gaafs."

Onzin je hebt 0,0 met Chelsea grapjas. Dit is puur business en dat mag natuurlijk.

  hij zegt ook niet dat hij wat heeft met chelsea, hij is gewoon een voetballiefhebber en kijkt graag naar goed voetbal. het is daarom ook geen wonder dat de liefde met arsenal wat bekoeld is. na de gouden periode van wenger/bergkamp/henry heeft arsenal dat niveau nooit meer gehaald. daarentegen is chelsea de afgelopen jaren heel goed bezig met als toppunt de verovering van de champions league.

  Ik ben 'n tijdje geleden door Westkapelle in Zeeland gereden en onderaan de dijk staat een friettent, ik heb daar de beste friet ooit op.
  En dat zeg ik als Brabander hé, wat bekend staat als DE friet provincie van Nederland.
