Teleurstelling overheerst bij Mercedes: "Geen kans om ons te verbeteren"

Het team van Mercedes kende een zeer teleurstellende vrijdag in Imola. Op het natte Italiaanse asfalt zakte Lewis Hamilton en George Russell wederom door het ijs. Allebei de coureurs bereikten het laatste kwalificatiedeel niet en dat was voor het eerst sinds 2012, een enorme schok voor de Duitse renstal.

Zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton bereikte voor de tweede keer dit jaar Q3 niet. De Brit kwam niet verder dan de dertiende tijd. Zijn jonge teamgenoot Russell deed het niet bepaald beter, hij kwam niet verder dan de elfde plek. Het verschil tussen de twee coureurs was niet reusachtig maar het resultaat stemde de regerend constructeurskampioen in mineur.

Banden

Bij het team zit men inmiddels met de handen in het haar. De resultaten vallen enorm tegen en alle hoop voor een nieuwe wereldtitel kan definitief de koelkast in. Kopstuk Andrew Shovlin spreekt zich in een persbericht uit: "Het waren een paar lastige sessies vandaag. We hebben een auto die de bandentemperatuur niet bepaald voor elkaar krijgt en dat heeft ons vandaag genekt. We waren op weg naar een schema met long runs maar dankzij de rode vlaggen konden we de gewenste rondjes niet rijden door de regen. We werden elfde en dertiende en we kregen geen kans om ons te verbeteren."

Race pace

Bij Mercedes zien ze het vervolg van het weekend ook niet bepaald zonnig in. Shovlin vreest met grote vrezen voor de aankomende sessies: "Het is niet makkelijk om hier in te halen dus we verwachten dat de rest van het weekend echt een uitdaging gaat worden. Maar we hebben laten zien dat onze race pace beter is dan onze snelheid over één rondje. Met de race en de sprint nog voor de boeg hebben we langer de tijd om te herstellen."

Gelukkig hebben ze Russell. Als Bottas er nog zat had hij ook nog eens achter Lewis aan gehobbeld en stonden ze deze kwali p18 en p13.
Dankzij Russell zit er nog iets in en stonden ze zelfs nog bijna in Q3.
Het lijkt er zelfs eerder op dat Russell Lewis op sleeptouw neemt dan andersom.

Dankzij Russell zit er nog iets in en stonden ze zelfs nog bijna in Q3.
Het lijkt er zelfs eerder op dat Russell Lewis op sleeptouw neemt dan andersom.
Als je dat afzet tegen de GOAT die dit jaar sterker en agressiever dan ooit zou zijn en meer plezier in racen heeft dan ooit tevoren dan ga je je afvragen hoe goed de ex-Williams rijder dan wel niet moet zijn. George zit denk al wel in het rijtje Ver/Lec/Nor/Rus

  @Rimmer: Lewis kan best sterker zijn dan ooit, maar als je een wagen hebt waar gewoon niet fatsoenlijk mee gereden kan worden komt dat natuurlijk niet meteen tot uiting....

  Vooralsnog staat Russell op de Soft nog steeds ruim bovenaan
  qua snelle ronde in VT2.
