Wedstrijdleider Wittich waarschijnlijk toch aanwezig in Miami

De nieuwe wedstrijdleiders, Niels Wittich en Eduardo Freitas, testten recentelijk positief op het coronavirus. De FIA heeft een vervanger klaarstaan, maar waarschijnlijk is dat laatste niet nodig en kan Wittich toch afreizen naar Miami, waar de vijfde ronde van het wereldkampioenschap wordt gehouden dit weekend. Dit meldt The Race.

Freitas was niet ingepland voor Miami. Hij is aan het werk tijdens de World Endurance Championship-ronde in Spa dit weekend. Wittich was tot nu toe de racedirecteur bij alle vier de Grands Prix, waarbij Freitas bij de meeste daarvan als zijn plaatsvervanger fungeerde.

Een FIA-woordvoerder vertelde destijds aan The Race dat het bestuursorgaan "geen medische informatie over ons personeel zou vrijgeven, tenzij deze relevant is voor het runnen van een evenement".

Hoewel de verplichte tests door de F1 zijn geschrapt en sommige landen alleen een COVID-19-vaccinatie nodig hebben om binnen te komen, verplichten de Verenigde Staten nog steeds een negatieve COVID-19-test binnen 24 uur na het reizen.

Indien Wittich alsnog positief test wordt Colin Haywood de plaatsvervanger van Wittich in Miami. Haywood was jarenlang een belangrijk lid van het FIA-race-controle-team en werkte nauw samen met wijlen racedirecteur Charlie Whiting en later met Michael Masi. Hij stopte in mei vorig jaar met zijn belangrijkste FIA-baan, maar behield een adviesfunctie.

  Nou dat is een beetje voorbarig, als Wittich alsnog positief test dan luistert zijn vervanger in Miami naar de naam Haywood.
  Want bij een positieve covid test kom je gewoon de US niet in, laat staan Miami.
  En probeer het maar niet stiekem want je krijgt onherroepelijk crockett en tubbs achter je aan in de Ferrari Testarossa. Over water kun je ook vergeten want diezelfde crockett heeft een snelle speedboat waarmee hij je alsnog pakt, meeneemt naar het hoofdbureau en voor je het weet sta je voor die chagrijnige lieutenant met al die putten in z'n gezicht. Dan ben je helemaal klaar met kakken
