Organisatie Miami luistert naar kritiek van coureurs: "Dat is natuurlijk niet goed"

Het gloednieuwe circuit in Miami viel afgelopen weekend niet bepaald in de smaak bij de coureurs. Het circuit rondom het Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens was spectaculair maar de layout en het asfalt kregen te maken met veel kritiek. Vooral de krappe chicane viel niet in de smaak.

Voorafgaand het weekend was al duidelijk dat de nieuwe baan een uitdaging zou worden. Maar eenmaal aangekomen in Miami kwamen de coureurs erachter dat er buiten de ideale lijn wel zeer veel viezigheid lag. Ook de zeer krappe chicane was een bron van kritiek, vooral na de crashes van Carlos Sainz en Esteban Ocon kwamen er veel harde woorden.

Chicane

De organisatie van de race communiceerde dat het de bedoeling was om spektakel te organiseren. De grote man van de race, Tom Garfinkel, liet aan Motorsport.com weten naar kritiek te luisteren: "We gaan veranderen wat er veranderd moet worden om de baan beter te maken. Ik denk dat wij niet genoeg hebben overbracht waarom we die chicane hebben. Het was noodzakelijk zodat het circuit lang genoeg was en zodat de rest van de baan geweldig zou zijn. Het gedeelte was nogal lastig want we moeten de auto's afremmen vanwege onvoldoende uitloop. Misschien is er een manier om dit te verbeteren maar het is noodzakelijk om de snelheid te verlagen."

Asfalt

Garfinkel heeft ook meegekregen dat de coureurs niet geheel tevreden waren met de ondergrond in Miami. De grote heer geeft aan ook hier naar te luisteren: "We gaan dit evalueren, we willen dit oplossen. Als men niet buiten de ideale lijn kunnen komen dan wordt er amper ingehaald. Dat is natuurlijk niet goed, ik wil zoveel mogelijk inhaalacties zien. We gaan er goed naar kijken. We gaan veranderen wat er moet worden veranderd."

  @Cyril, het asfalt was volgens mij niet zo erg als in Turkije 2020.

  Het is een nieuwe baan en dan is het altijd een beetje afwachten of de theorie aansluit bij de praktijk. Voldoende inhaal acties gezien en niet enkel op het rechte stuk. Mooie acties van bijvoorbeeld Vettel naast Latifi. Inhaal van Max op LEC was dan wel op DRS maar de fout werd gemaakt door LEC in de bocht ervoor. Verder goed dat men luistert en zoekt naar verbeter punten, dat is uitstekend! Om het als amateuristisch af te doen vind ik onterecht en absoluut geen recht doen aan het werk dat geleverd is.

Ik las ergens dat dit op 1 na de race was met de meeste inhaalacties. Dan valt het allemaal nog wel mee met die vuile lijn.

ik proef dat het trendy is om nieuwe events genadeloos neer te sabelen omdat het niet traditioneel genoeg is voor puristen of wat dan ook.
Ik doen daar niet zomaar aan mee, in het geval van de Miami gp ga ik daar slechts gedeeltelijk in mee.
Dingen die me tegenstaan zoals een nep jachthaven welke bij mij niet in de smaak valt, of het overdreven gedoe met de podiumceremonie, daar prik ik wel doorheen, ook die gekke krappen chicane was ik geen fan van.
Toch zie ik wel genoeg aanknopingspunten voor een mooie toekomst voor deze gp.

Er is totaal niet gekeken naar andere circuits waar de F1 al langer komt. Het lijkt er op alsof Amerikanen alles op hun eigen manier willen doen omdat ze overtuigt zijn dat zij het het beste voor elkaar kunnen krijgen. COTA is ook al jaar in jaar uit een drama en de reden daarvan is bekend. Maar men legt gewoon een nieuwe asfalt laag aan en zegt dat het is opgelost. Vervolgens zegt de Moto GP dat ze niet willen racen en zijn de F1 coureurs hun vullingen kwijt.

Ik heb dit weekend niet de indruk gehad dat het om de kwaliteit van racen ging maar puur om de show. En dan hoor je de ene na de andere clown roepen dat dit heel goed is voor de sport. Heel vreemd.

Wat ik niet begrijp is dat ze al maanden in een simulator zitten. Dan wisten ze toch ook al lang van te voren dat bijvoorbeeld die chicane helemaal ruk zou zijn. Vind dit een beetje klagen achteraf?

  Ik denk eigenlijk dat iedereen dit al wist, maar om pr-technische redenen is opgedragen om deze kritiek op voorhand niet breeduit te delen met de pers.

Persoonlijk vind ik het een aangename afwisseling op de kalender, het biedt in ieder geval veel entertainment naast de baan. Natuurlijk moet de organisatie niet doorslaan met te veel van dit soort mickey mouse grand prix's, maar een paar van dit soort 'evenementen' maken zo'n seizoen toch afwisselend genoeg.

Overigens een goed punt dat de organisatie openstaat voor feedback en aangeeft dit te willen verbeteren. We zullen zien...
