Formule 1 koopt stuk grond voor megabedrag in Las Vegas

Enkele weken geleden maakte de Formule 1 bekend dat de Grand Prix van Las Vegas volgend seizoen terugkeert op de kalender. De sport maakte bekend dat men vanaf 2023 dwars door het centrum van het gokparadijs gaat racen. Het wordt een zeer unieke race op een zeer unieke locatie.

Iets anders unieks is het feit dat Formule 1-eigenaar Liberty Media de race zelf gaat promoten. Het circuit leidt dwars door de stad en het was dan ook de vraag waar men de pitstraat en de paddock zou laten. De stad staat immers propvol en men moest op zoek naar een oplossing. De sport heeft een oplossing gevonden want men heeft een stuk grond voor een enorme prijs aangeschaft in Las Vegas.

Kosten

Voorafgaand de Grand Prix van Miami van afgelopen weekend sprak Liberty Media-CEO Greg Maffei zich uit. In een call met Wall Street-investeerders legt hij de plannen uit: "Wat een verschil is met andere races is dat de Formule 1 en Liberty Media deze race zelf promoten in samenwerking met lokale betrokkenen en Live Nation. Het opbouwen van deze baan zorgt voor meer kapitaaluitgaven en operationele kosten. Nu is het te vroeg om hier cijfers op te plakken. Wij hopen dat we dat later in het jaar kunnen doen."

Grond

Eén bedrag is in ieder geval al wel duidelijk, Liberty heeft namelijk de portemonnee getrokken voor een groot stuk grond. Maffei is er in de call eerlijk over: "Ik wil graag opmerken dat Liberty Media een overeenkomst heeft gesloten waarmee we ten oosten van The Strip 15 hectare grond hebben verworven. We leggen daarmee het ontwerp van de baan vast en we creëren een plek voor de pits en de paddock. Ik verwacht dat we deze transactie in het tweede kwartaal afronden. De aankoopprijs van dit stuk grond bedroeg zo'n 240 miljoen dollar en we financieren het met kasmiddelen van de Formule 1."

  Waarom? Laat F1 maar lekker zélf opdraaien voor het organiseren van een F1 race. Uiteindelijk zijn zij al sinds jaar en dag de enigen die er wat aan verdienen. De circuit-eigenaren en de lokale/regionale overheden verdienen er niets aan anders dan niet-aantoonbare 'promotie' voor stad en regio.

Dat zal dat stuk braak liggend terrein (parkeerplaats) ter hoogte van bocht 1, 2, 3, 4 en 14 wel zijn.
