Latifi geeft problemen toe: "Ben qua performance nog niet waar ik wil zijn"

Nicholas Latifi kent vooralsnog een zeer teleurstellende start van het seizoen. De Canadese Williams-coureur wordt volledig overklast door zijn nieuwe teamgenoot Alexander Albon. Daarnaast heeft Latifi ook nog geen enkel puntje gescoord, Mick Schumacher is de enige andere vaste coureur zonder punten. Latifi staat dan ook kleurloos 21ste in het wereldkampioenschap.

Teamgenoot Albon heeft intussen al drie punten gescoord en lijkt de nieuwe kopman van Williams te zijn. Over Latifi gaan inmiddels meerdere verhalen rond, men vreest namelijk voor zijn toekomst bij het team. Volgens de geruchten zou Oscar Piastri hem kunnen gaan vervangen. Williams ontkende overigens alle geruchten over een voortijdige exit.

Vertrouwen

Latifi weet zelf ook wel dat het nog niet op rolletjes loopt. De Canadese coureur steekt tegenover Motorsportweek op eerlijke wijze de hand in eigen boezem: "Het is duidelijk dat ik qua performance nog niet ben waar ik wil zijn. Ik denk dat ik na Imola wel duidelijk in details heb uitgelegd wat voor gevoelens ik heb met het vertrouwen in de auto. Dat is iets wat natuurlijk heel belangrijk is. Dankzij meerdere redenen is dat nog niet op het niveau dat ik wil. Ik denk dat ik elke keer progressie boek als ik achter het stuur kruip."

Tricky

De Canadese coureur merkt daarnaast ook dat bij Williams nog niet alles naar wens gaat. Latifi merkt dat ook zijn team nog een fikse achterstand heeft: "Het is al tricky vanaf de start. Het is duidelijk dat we als team nog niet zijn waar we willen zijn. We komen downforce tekort en we hebben problemen met de balans. Ik denk dat dat, samen met het feit dat ik nog niet het gevoel heb met de karaktertrekken van de auto vergeleken met die van vorig seizoen, de redenen zijn."

Latifi heeft dan wel zijn diploma voor de F1 ruimschoots behaald, om het maar eens zo te noemen. Uiteindelijk blijkt die klasse toch net even een maatje te groot voor hem te zijn. Dat heeft hij niet alleen zichzelf maar ook zijn teamgenoten hebben hem dat inmiddels wel pijnlijk duidelijk gemaakt.

  Omdat hij gewoon aardig is had hij wel wat support van me. En ik moet zeggen. Vorig jaar de tweede helfs van het seizoen gaf hij in de races Russell redelijk partij en er waren zelfs races waar hij gewoon een klein tikje sneller was.
  Maar wat hij nu laat zien is echt dramatisch. Of Albon zou van niveau Russell moeten zijn. En dan nog heeft latifi te veel crashes. Hij is ondertussen ook zijn vertrouwen in zichzelf kwijt.
  Tijd voor een andere rijder.
