FIA zoekt naar nieuwe wedstrijdleiders in rallywereld

Sinds dit seizoen werkt de Formule 1 met twee wedstrijdleiders die elkaar afwisselen. Niels Wittich en Eduardo Freitas werden begin dit jaar aangesteld als de vervangers van Michael Masi. Vooralsnog krijgen ze vooral complimenten maar bij autosportfederatie FIA is nog niet iedereen tevreden over de huidige structuur.

FIA-president Mohammed Ben Sulayem zou namelijk graag meer wedstrijdleiders willen zien. Hij is een voorstander van een systeem waarbij wedstrijdleiders elkaar afwisselen, zoals Freitas en Wittich nu al doen. Maar goede wedstrijdleiders groeien niet aan de bomen en de FIA moet dan ook opzoek naar een oplossing. Men is in ieder geval druk bezig met een oplossing.

Navigator

Ben Sulayem is een voormalig rallycoureur en voor een oplossing kijkt hij dan ook rond in de rallywereld. Hij wil namelijk navigators opleiden tot wedstrijdleiders. Tegenover Autosport legt Ben Sulayem de situatie uit: "We hebben een uitdaging in het vinden van meer wedstrijdleiders, wat moeten we doen? We kunnen ze nergens kopen of inhuren. We moeten ervoor zorgen dat we ze in ieder geval opleiden en trainen zodat we er meer dan drie hebben. Ik bedoel, we moeten een soort afwisseling hebben."

Proces

De FIA-president denkt dat een rally-navigator alles in zich heeft om een goede wedstrijdleider te worden. Ben Sulayem redeneert vanuit zijn eigen rally-ervaringen: "Als ik kijk naar de efficiëntie en de structuur, dan zou ik naar hen kijken. Ze bekommeren zich om de service. Ik kan mij herinneren dat ze zich bezig hielden met de planning, de organisatie, de route en de brandstof. Alles is er. We denken dus aan deze mensen en ze een proces te laten doorlopen om te kijken of het werkt. Ik weet zeker dat we geschikte mensen vinden. Het gaat snel gebeuren en we bekijken het met de FIA, ik heb er vertrouwen in."
