Thuisrijder Sainz opgelucht: "Enorm zwaar weekend"

Het Spaanse publiek stond vandaag op de banken voor thuisrijder Carlos Sainz. De Spaanse Ferrari-coureur is al het gehele weekend aardig onder weg en men hoopte op een stunt voor het thuispubliek. Sainz heeft echter te maken met zijn sterke teamgenoot Charles Leclerc, ook in deze kwalificatie.

De pole op het circuit nabij Catalonië ging dan ook naar Leclerc. De Monegask was nipt sneller dan zijn grote rivaal Max Verstappen. Thuisrijder Sainz werd door het thuispubliek hartstochtelijk naar voren geschreeuwd maar het mocht niet baten. Hij start zijn thuisrace morgen vanaf de derde plaats en deelt de tweede startrij met de sterk presterende George Russell.

Zwaar

Sainz haalde na afloop opgelucht adem. De Spaanse coureur had namelijk best wat moeite op het bloedhete Catalaanse asfalt. Bij interviewster van dienst Naomi Schiff besprak hij zijn kwalificatie: "Tot nu toe is het echt een enorm zwaar weekend. De omstandigheden zijn niet zo makkelijk met de hitte en al die wind. Maar vandaag reden we een aardige rondje en staan we morgen derde. De start wordt echt de sleutel tot succes morgen. Het bandenmanagement wordt ook belangrijk en we gaan zien wat we vanaf daar kunnen doen."

De Spaanse Grand Prix wordt vrijwel altijd gewonnen vanaf de pole position dus Sainz kan een winstpartij eigenlijk wel vergeten. Zelf wil hij daar niet aan: "Alles kan morgen gebeuren. We gaan ons best doen om bij de start aan kop te liggen. Het was geen ideale kwalificatie omdat ik de ideale ronde niet kon rijden op deze gebruikte banden. We hadden moeite met de nieuwe banden in onze eerste stint en we gaan ons best doen."

Opgelucht......... mag eigenlijk wel een beetje teleurgesteld zijn met zijn 3e plek, iedereen heeft last van de omstandigheden. Ik kan de titel niet helemaal plaatsen, Charles staat pole.

Sainz valt mij tegen dit jaar. Als je ziet wat Leclerc uit de auto haalt en dat afzet tegen Sainz is Sainz gewoon een tweede rijder geworden terwijl hij vorig jaar vaak Leclerc de baas was. Daarnaast kon hij prima Norris bijbenen terwijl Norris Ricciardo sloopt.

  Sainz was vorig jaar ook Leclerc niet de baas. Hij eindigde met een paar punten meer, maar had ook twee races meer gereden dan Leclerc. En net die twee keer dat Leclerc niet finishte scoorde Sainz veel punten.

Ik ben benieuwd of Sainz z'n derde plaats mag houden. Hij stond namelijk na de kwalificatie eerst een paar slokken water te drinken en ging zich daarna pas wegen. Is dat meer mensen opgevallen? Volgens mij mag dat niet namelijk...
