Hobbelig Monaco bezorgt Hamilton ongemakken

De eerste vrije training in Monaco verliep zonder noemenswaardige incidenten. Wel voelden de heren coureurs voor het eerst hoe de huidige generatie auto's zich gedragen op het legendarische stratencircuit. Met enige regelmaat meldden coureurs zich met klachten op de boordradio, niet veel van hen konden genieten.

Lewis Hamilton beleefde een zeer ongemakkelijke eerste training. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen kampt al vrijwel het gehele seizoen met porpoising-problemen maar in Monaco leek het nog erger dan voorheen. De Mercedes stuiterde alle kanten op en al vroeg in de training meldde Hamilton zich op de radio met een boodschap voor het team: "Ik ervaar een enorme hoeveelheid gehobbel."

Porpoising?

Het was niet duidelijk of de problemen van Hamilton werden veroorzaakt door porpoising. In tegenstelling tot veel andere circuits rijden de coureurs in Monaco niet op de meest vlakke ondergrond. Het circuit is immers een echt stratencircuit en de hobbels op de baan zijn dan ook niet mals. Dat verklaart ook waarom onder andere Esteban Ocon en Lance Stroll klaagden over problemen met onder andere grip.

Elleboogbeschermers

Maar Hamiltons problemen werden naar verloop van de training steeds erger. De Brit meldde zich met een behoorlijk duidelijke radioboodschap: "Het is zo hobbelig hier, man! Ik word er verdomme helemaal gek van!" De hobbels zorgen ook voor fysieke ongemakken bij de Brit. Hamilton kwam tegen het einde van de training namelijk met een zeer opvallend verzoek: "Ik heb elleboogbeschermers nodig in de cockpit want het hobbelt zo enorm erg!"

Rustaaaaagh mensen, straks gaat er een andere voorvleugel op en dan is alles opgelost. niks aan de hand. komt wel goed. en als het niet wordt opgelost door de nieuwe geniale voorvleugel dan staan ze er over 2 weken wel weer. en dan gaan ze winnen, dan wel. en zo niet dan een week erna wel. mocht dat dan ook niet gebeuren dan staan ze er na de zomerstop wel. dan echt. en zo niet dan staan ze er volgend jaar gelijk, want dan syoppen ze met de ontwikkeling. dan gaan ze volgend jaar alles winnen, en als ze volgend jaar er niet staan dan .......

  Luister Roy, ik zat te luisteren naar deskundig commentaar van Sky, die gaven aan dat de nieuwe voorvleugel er pas in VT2 opgezet wordt. Want ze willen schade aan de vleugel al in een VT1 voorkomen. Dat die nieuwe voorvleugel het hobbelen oplost, dat is niet gezegd. Maar het kan wel een factor zijn.
  Ik vind je eerlijk gezegd een beetje kort door de bocht leuteren. Kan het normaal wel hebben, maar nu zit je onnodig te roeptoeteren. Provoceren zelfs.

Zoals het nu lijkt, is het dit keer niet het porpoising (met aerodynamische oorzaak), maar de stijfheid van de W13 en hoe de ophanging is afgesteld. Een meer mechanische oorzaak dus.

  stugger afveren heeft waarschijnlijk het porpoising opgelost, maar op een hobbelig straten circuit werkt dat niet zo goed, want een stug afgeveerde auto houd geen grip op de weg, en dat zag je meteen in het begin. En de nieuwe velgen/banden helpen daar ook niet bij
