Mercedes verklaart helmwissel van Hamilton

De Grand Prix van Monaco verliep afgelopen weekend zeer chaotisch. De start van de race werd uitgesteld vanwege heftige regenval en een storing bij de startsystemen van de FIA. Daarna werd de rode vlag nogmaals gezwaaid na een harde crash van Haas-coureur Mick Schumacher.

De overige coureurs moesten dus tweemaal geduldig afwachten om weer van start te gaan. Veel van de coureurs verlieten hun cockpit en wachtten af in hun garages. Eenmaal terug op de baan was er iets opvallends aan de hand met Lewis Hamilton, de Brit reed ineens met een ander helmontwerp rond. De Mercedes-coureur reed in Monaco met een speciale witte helm maar na de rode vlag reed hij ineens weer met zijn gebruikelijke gele helm.

Helder vizier

Het was een opvallend moment maar het zal Hamilton vermoedelijk niet zoveel interesseren. De fans wel en daarom werd Mercedes dan ook bestookt met vragen over de helmwissel. In de debrief op YouTube reageert Mercedes-kopstuk Andrew Shovlin op de vragen: "In de donkere, natte omstandigheden zoals we bij de start hadden rijden de coureurs met een helder vizier zodat ze het best mogelijke zicht hebben in de spray."

Zon

Hamiltons witte helm had dus zo'n helder vizier. Tijdens de race veranderden de weersomstandigheden echter en kwam het zonnetje zelfs eventjes om de hoek kijken. Shovlin legt dan ook duidelijk uit waarom Hamilton van helm wisselde: "Wanneer de race droger begint te worden, en de zon lager hangt, wisselde hij naar een getint vizier, het was ook al bijna zes uur. Hij wisselde omdat dit vizier je een beter zicht geeft en een beter contrast, ook zorgt het ervoor dat je minder last hebt van de zon."

Ik denk meer een wanhoopspoging op zoek naar geluk. Iets dat hem jarenlang steeds maar weer ten deel viel en waarmee hij zijn races omtoverde tot huzarenstukjes. Waar is dat geluk gebleven? Dat zal ook Lewis zich vertwijfeld afvragen.

Ik denk meer een wanhoopspoging op zoek naar geluk. Iets dat hem jarenlang steeds maar weer ten deel viel en waarmee hij zijn races omtoverde tot huzarenstukjes. Waar is dat geluk gebleven? Dat zal ook Lewis zich vertwijfeld afvragen.

Is het niet zo dat een vizier relatief snel op een helm vervangen kan worden? Daar zitten die schroeven op de zijkant van de helm voor. Losschroeven, vizier eraf, andere erop, vastschroeven. En gaan.
Zelfs mijn skihelm werkt zo, maar ik ski altijd met dezelfde livery op mijn helm, dus ik ben een uiterst ervaren vizierenwisselaar ;-)

  Bovendien lijkt me in jouw geval het wisselen van een vizier een stuk goedkoper dan het wisselen van een helm. Daar ik vermoed dat al jouw helmen specialistisch maatwerk zullen moeten zijn i.v.m. die snorkel kan dit aardig in de papieren lopen, toch? ;-)

  Volgens mij mag je officieel zelfs niet eens wisselen tijdens een race.
  Dit omdat het gewicht (rijder + auto) zowel voorafgaand als na de race gecontroleerd wordt.

dat was een schreeuw om aandacht.
de schijnwerpers staan al een poosje niet op hem gericht en meneer doet werkelijk alles om in the picture te blijven...
eerst hadden we het sieraden debacle....dat is achter de rug...en nu doet meneertje een poging met bijvoorbeeld zijn helmpje.
